2.0 Critical Analysis Report of: How do Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation, and Blockchains Affect the Human Factor in Business Process Management?
2.1 Summary
The article by Mendling et al. (2018) represents a panel discussion on “How do machine learning, robotics process automation and blockchains affect the human factor in business process management” at 15th International Conference on Business Process management. There is detailed analysis of emergent technologies with their benefits and the impact they have on business processes. It relates management activities with Business Process Management Lifecycle.
The different stages of business process such as discovery, analysis, redesign, implementation and monitoring will going to impact business processes and in what way that is not sure. There are several concerns in mind related to accuracy and trust on the technology. The BPM lifecycle aims at reducing the time of interaction between organisation and client. The various systems, which integrate with these processes, will make word done faster and reliable. This may be required to change certain elements in the form of re-engineering the processes to demonstrate productivity.
To overcome manual work automation is adopted by the organisations and for transformational results, different strategies are adopted such as offshoring, outsourcing and disintermediation. This emphasises on the impact at task and coordination level. Some technologies are dominant at task level and some are at coordination level. They have different behaviours at task and coordination level, which is analysed to know the effect on humans.
The repetitive tasks can easily accommodate these technologies but complex task cannot be completed without the combination of human mind and efforts and technology. The major challenges, which are identified and discussed, are employment, ethics, social integration, customer experience, job design, technology and regulation.
These challenges limit the scope of technology in business process as accuracy, biasness towards particular situation can be observed in results obtained. The human factor still holds stronger position as there are areas where technology needs to be studied...
