Human body can be injured from various activities throughout life. These injuries lead to the development of
wounds. Wound healing is a natural mechanism that every human body possesses, except in case of some genetic disorder like Haemophilia (Gouin & Kiecolt-Glaser, 2011). However, there are a number of factors that can influence, hinder or boost this natural process. Stress is a psychological human emotion that can occur because of any physical or mental pressure. Stress has been linked to unusual metabolic changes and these changes influence the natural wound healing process (Sinha, 2012). This essay aims to understand the way stress affects the process of wound healing and identify the ways to improve wound healing in humans. This aim will be achieved by addressing the concepts of stress and wound healing in the first section, biology of wound healing process and negative impacts of stress in the second section, along with suggesting ways to Martha for improving her wound healing process by next Valentines’ in the last section.
The first section of this essay deals in evaluating the concepts of stress and wound healing. Selye (2013) defines stress as a reaction or response towards any unusual challenge or demand from the outside environment. This stress can be due to variable factors and these factors may include body’s hormonal imbalance, thermostat variability, unusual change in diet patterns, drugs, accident and many more factors. In other words, any activity or factor, to which the body is not used too, leads to stress development. Stress can be positive or negative, acute that is short-term or chronic that is long-term; nevertheless, ultimately, leading to several health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression, menstrual problems, delayed wound healing and much more (MedlinePlus, 2019).
Wound healing is a very complex and critical process involved in the recovery from any injury. Since it is completely a natural process and poor healing increases the risk of wound infections or any other complications; therefore, factors, affecting the process of wound healing, need to be studied prominently. Stress is one of the factors that effects wound healing in a negative manner. As mentioned by Gouin and Kiecolt-Glaser (2011), psychological factors modulate wound healing in a negative way, as shown in their study, conducted on 53 older patients suffering from chronic lower leg wounds. Patients, who were suffering from stress or anxiety issues, were found to be 4 times more likely to be categorised among delayed healing group. Another significant study from them showed that patients, who were more stressed at the time of their discharge, had poor wound healing and more infections after 6 weeks of surgery as compared to the ones, who had less or no stress.
The second section of the essay focuses on the biology of wound healing process and negative impacts of stress.
