Microsoft Word - PHYS1250 Tutorial Problem Assignment.docx PHYS1250 Tutorial Problem Assignment Get ready to work on a semester-long project that will help you prepare for the tests and learn some physics! This project has been developed to offer you some flexibility and allow for some creativity. Don’t delay, it’s in your best interested to submit early (see below)! Your Task • You may start with any number and then make two other choices to make your tic-tac-toe line. Note that each problem comes from one (or two) of the four units covered in this course. • Create a written or video “tutorial” solving the chosen problems. The goal is to solve the problem in a clear and organized way, so that anyone can look at your solution and learn how to solve this type of problem. • Explain every step - what you are doing and how/why you are doing it. You do not need to explain the algebraic steps (i.e., you don't need to say that you are adding a term to both sides of an equation) as long as I can see the algebraic steps. Focus on explaining the process. • All tutorials must include at least one relevant diagram. • Write very neatly and/or speak clearly. Assignment Expectations • This in an individual or group assignment. Please do not collaborate with others unless you are in a group with them. • Groups can have up to 3 students. You can sign up your group in Canvas (sign up for the first empty group). Groups must be formed in Canvas by September 16, 2019. • If you would like to be placed in a random group, let me know right away. Do not just add yourself to a group that is already formed! • Posting any part of this assignment on homework help websites such as Chegg.com is strictly prohibited. Posting on or copying solutions from such websites will constitute an Honor Code violation and will result in a zero for the assignment, as well as a report to the Office of Students Rights and Responsibilities. Schedule • Turn in your tutorial (one per group) on Canvas. Use the Studio tab for submitting videos. • Turn in your tutorial problems by the following dates to receive graded feedback and a chance to resubmit for a higher grade. The earlier you turn it in, the more time I will have to give you feedback! Problem Due Date Unit 1 September 16 Unit 2 October 9 Unit 3 November 1 Unit 4 November 25 Final submission deadline (no feedback or resubmission): December 2, 2019 Tic-Tac-Toe Assignment Options Unit 1. You are on top of a 65 m building and throw a rock with a speed of 8 m/s. You choose the angle of the throw. How far does it land? Unit 2. A block is on a rough surface and connected to a hanging block. It is pulled (and moving) to the left by a force parallel to the surface. Define variables as appropriate and find the acceleration of each object. Unit 3. A block is pulled up 2 m along a rough incline by a force parallel to the incline. Define variables as appropriate and find the net work on the block. Unit 2. An object is on a rough incline. It is pulled (and moving) upward by a force parallel to the incline. Define variables as appropriate and find the acceleration of the object. Unit 4. A uniform rod of mass 5 kg is hinged to a wall at one end and suspended from the wall by a cable that is attached to the other end of the rod at an angle q = 30° as shown. What is the tension in the cable? Unit 1. Find the resultant of these three forces acting on an object. Note: drawing is not to scale. Unit 4. A cube is suspended in water. The cube has a density of 1500 kg/m3. Find its apparent weight. Unit 3. A car going south collides with a truck going northwest, and they stick together. Define variables as appropriate and find the final velocity of the wreckage. Units 2 & 3. Consider the roller coaster car at rest as shown. If the normal force between the car and the track is zero at the top of the “hill”, what is the minimum required initial height of the car? Define variables as appropriate. Grading Rubric Each choice will receive a score from 0-33. for a total of 100 possible points. Score Criteria 33.4 exemplary All of the following qualities have been met: ü The tutorial is neat and organized ü The diagram is relevant, accurate and complete ü The solution is clear and logically connected ü The solution contains all essential steps ü All the steps are explained in detail ü The solution is accurate 30.7 accomplished Contains a minor problem in one of these areas: ü The tutorial is neat and organized ü The diagram is relevant, accurate and complete ü The solution is clear and logically connected ü The solution contains all essential steps ü All the steps are explained in detail ü The solution is accurate 28 proficient Contains a noticeable problem in one of these areas, or a minor problem in two areas: ü The tutorial is neat and organized ü The diagram is relevant, accurate and complete ü The solution is clear and logically connected ü The solution contains all essential steps ü All the steps are explained in detail ü The solution is accurate 25.3 developing Contains noticeable problems in two areas: ü The tutorial is neat and organized ü The diagram is relevant, accurate and complete ü The solution is clear and logically connected ü The solution contains all essential steps ü All the steps are explained in detail ü The solution is accurate 22.6 beginning Contains problems in more than two areas. ü The tutorial is neat and organized ü The diagram is relevant, accurate and complete ü The solution is clear and logically connected ü The solution contains all essential steps ü All the steps are explained in detail ü The solution is accurate 10 unsatisfactory Contains a problem so severe that the quality of the assignment has been compromised. ü The tutorial is neat and organized ü The diagram is relevant, accurate and complete ü The solution is clear and logically connected ü The solution contains all essential steps ü All the steps are explained in detail ü The solution is accurate 0 Minimal or no attempt.
