Success and Failure of Arranged Marriages
Part 1- The Introduction
Marriages consist of a union between two people who swear under the name of God or a d
ivine entity to stay together for life. The institution of marriage provides structure to the society. It grants stability to married individuals as they depend on each other to go through the various stages of life. It also results in the generation of off-springs and the continuation of families. In early times societies were conservative and marriages were decided by families. Marriage was a family decision taken by the elders in the family and the individuals to be married had hardly any say in the marriage. In modern times, trends have changed and more and more people are considering marriages of choice where the individual looks for their own partner with families not being involved in the process (Allendorf, 453-469). There are differing opinions regarding the success and failure of arranged marriages.
Part 2- The Three Positions
Position 1
One group of people believe that arranged marriages are successful to a great extent when compared to marriages of choice. A study by Epstein, Pandit and Thakar published by the University of Toronto Press in 2014, showed that love in arranged marriages grows over time. This along with other factors such as commitment and sacrifice was determined to greatly contribute to the success of arranged marriages.
