LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES AND ITS SOLUTIONS
1. In the digital, mobile and social world, change is relentless. Most of today’s organisations and leaders are struggling with the transitio
n from a stable to a chaotic environment. What skills and qualities do leaders need in these circumstances?
In the words of (Johansen, 2009) the world is transitioning with volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Every organization in the world is subject to this change and for them to survive and thrive, they need an efficient leader; A leader who can implement effective strategies and guide them into the future. This isn’t an easy task due to the uncertainty with which we are evolving and there are certain skills and qualities that a leader must possess to withstand a chaotic environment. The transitional leadership includes the maker’s instinct, dilemma flipping, clarity, immersive learning ability, bio-empathy and quiet transparency. To achieve this, leaders must be strongly connected with those around them and also know when to implement these skills which are highly imperative to the success of the transformation.
Digital transformation requires more than just efficient leadership. It also requires a well-developed strategy. One of the skills to devise effective strategy according to (Johansen, 2009) is the Maker’s instinct i.e. to be able to channel the intuitions to develop things and at the same time participate with the rest in building or making. Dilemma flipping is another skill that is an incredible feat of intelligence to make decisions with conflicting ideas. An example of this was demonstrated by Sephora, one of the world’s leading retailers in beauty products (Halzack, 2015). By using a digital platform to ease consumer’s decision making, they successfully shifted the paradigm in the market of beauty products with the introduction of their Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality integrated mobile application. This application helps consumers to try the products virtually and make their purchase decisions and also provide feedback from previous users by scanning the product. This successful digital transformation has addressed one of the key variables of influencing consumer behaviour that’s consumer delight.
According to (Sow, 2018), organizations that go through a digital transformation require creative leaders and showing faith in the managers and employees who are experts in this domain to ignite creativity and the innovation of ideas to flourish amid uncertainty and change. With the rise in digital change and advancements in the technology, (Johansen, 2009) explains how the immersive learning ability is a skill that leaders should possess to familiarise themselves with different environments to change the perception and experience to make strategic decisions in change management. This ability also helps in building different scenarios and making future forecasts when uncertainty is inevitable. Another characteristic of this skill also brings out motivation and inspiration among peers to transform the organization. A key trait of leaders in transition is the ability to collaborate effectively with the other members of the organization comprising teams, members, other leaders based on the research of (Sow, 2018). This efficient collaboration can lead to the successful execution of projects and minimize operational issues. Constructive depolarization is the key to stand firm in a chaotic environment. It is a skill...
