For this assignment, you are required to write an analysis of one of the poems below which can be found in your textbook:

You are essentially examining the poem line by line, explaining literally, what the poem is saying , and then explaining, figuratively, what the poem’s deeper meaning is ….the theme.


In the body paragraphs of your paper, identify at least three poetic devices, such as symbolism, tone, diction, metaphor or imagery, that are important to the poem’s meaning in some way. State explicitly how your example of a poetic device helps the poet to convey the main idea or theme.

Introduction
    Digging is a poem written by Seamus Heaney who tries to capture the present moment of his life, his way of living and compare it to the lives of his father and grandfather who were into farming. The line “By God, the old man could handle a spade, just like his old man” conveys the theme of what his ancestors did for a living. Heaney, in his poem, uses repetition, alliteration, and metaphor to communicate the way his father dug the ground and worked when he was a little boy. He highlights their strength and hard work as they worked the soil and the continuous digging in the gound. The poem’s tone is serious and recalls the ancestral occupation.
Digging
    The first line of the poem is imperative in capturing the present moment that the poet is in as he writes the poem. The use of symbolism appears in the second line “snug as a gun” as he describes the power of the pen and how it transformed his life. Unlike his ancestors, Heaney didn’t pursue farming and instead became a writer and the first two lines of the poem indicate what the writer did for a living.
