Introduction
Health promotion could be considered as behavioural science, which draws from environmental, biological, physical, psychological as well as medical sciences for the promotion of health and wellness of individuals. It would be essential to consider that, individuals should be aware of medical sciences, which could enable them to increase control over their health. ‘The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion’ was the first international conference concerning health promotion. It held on 21st day of November 1986 in Ottawa and resulted into ‘CHARTER’ for action to achieve health for all by year 2000 and beyond. According to this charter, health promotion refers to the process where individuals are educated and empowered; thus, facilitating their control on health.
According to the report presented by Centre for disease control and prevention, 28% of adults, which are above 50 years, have been reported to be physically inactive. Likewise, 2 in 3 adults above 50 years of age were reported to suffer from at least one chronic disease and inactivity has been reported to be 30% higher among those individuals with chronic disease. Therefore, this paper will present a health promotion intervention concerning physical activity among elderly. Further, this paper will also discuss the rationales behind physical inactivity and efforts will be made to present strategies, which would help to reduce physical inactivity and associated health concerns. Moreover, health promotion strategy would significantly reflect a decline in physical inactivity among elderly.
Strategies Affecting Physical Inactivity in the Elderly
According to ‘The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion’, there are certain pre-requisites for health including peace, shelter, food, education, income, sustainable resources, social justice, equity and much more. Therefore, before implication of any health promotion plan or strategy, it would be essential to consider that the selected population or the sample group must have these pre-requisite resources in order to build a secure foundation. Good health is a major resource for social, economic and personal development and an important dimension of quality of life.
Strategy 1: Mediate the Information Related To Good Nutrition for Older Adults
As evident from the information presented by ‘The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion’, good health is a major resource for economic, social and personal development concerning a good quality life for the selected group of individuals. There are numerous factors, which can favour or facilitate health such as, economic, political, cultural, social, behavioural and biological. Therefore, it would be essential to consider that the selected or prepared health promotion action, intervention, or strategy should aim at making the prior presented conditions favourable concerning advocacy for health.
It would be essential to consider the fact that, older patients might develop poor eating habits for numerous reasons and this could be a major factor behind their physical activity. Poor nutritional habits could be reflected through decreased sense of taste and smell along with certain other issues such as depression or lack of teeth. Irrespective of the rationale behind poor nutrition, resultant lack of energy makes it difficult for the body of the older individuals to perform any physical activities.
Likewise, Ticinesi et al. (2016) mentioned that although energy needs of older individuals might be less compared to a younger individual yet, older individuals require a significantly higher intake of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, calcium, Vitamin B6 as well as B12. Increased dosages of vitamins and minerals for older individuals could be justified by slowed metabolism and less absorption rate. Therefore, the first strategy concerning health promotion for physical inactivity among older individuals revolves around healthy eating and good nutrition.
This health promotion plan would be required to emphasise upon good nutrition and its impact on the independence and well-being of older adults.
