Assessment 3 – Reflective Writing Essay Guidelines

Word Limit: 2,000

Weighting: 45%

Background:

To reflect means reviewing our inner processes of thinking and feeling. John Dewey, a key originator of thinking about reflection sees it as a special form of problem solving, which requires qualities of open-mindedness, responsibility and self-awareness. Schön emphasises the concept of ‘reflection-in-action’, where the reflective practitioner evaluates intuitive understandings intrinsic to experience as a guide to action. This ‘on-the-spot’ processing is different from retrospective contemplation, which typifies most reflection on learning.

This essay will require your thinking to go through the following levels and have your essay arrive at the third, the critical level.

1. the
technical or evaluative level
– students typically start at the first level, mostly describing and evaluating their experiences, with little connection to theory

2. the
practical or sense-making level
– most progress to the second level, making sense of their experiences or learning in the light of theoretical understandings

3. the
critical level
– students tend to find the third level the most challenging, as it requires a capacity to critically examine the values, beliefs and assumptions underlying their actions.

The Essay Question:

Identify from your experience at least 1 event/scenario where you have applied, or failed to apply, Project Management Theory. This can for example be during one of the 5 process groups (Initiating; Planning; Executing; Monitoring and controlling; or Closing) or focussed on one or more of the 10 knowledge areas (see the textbook, page 11). If there is no prior experience reflect on the experience of project managing the Old Farm House Project.

Reflect on this/these event(s) by:

1. giving a short description of the event/scenario,

2. analysing the event/scenario using the literature[1], and

3. reflecting on the event/scenario to identify how you can modify future outcomes when you are managing a project.

To help you in this assessment there will be a seminar on Reflective Writing in Week 4.

o Include name, student number and word count (excluding reference list & appendices)

· Table of contents (if using sub-headings)

· Introduction

· Main Body

o How you structure the body of the essay is up to you, but a useful guide might be three sub-sections:

§ Reflection on the event/scenario

o Alternatively you can use the 5 R’s as your subsections:

§ Reporting

§ Responding

§ Relating

§ Reasoning

o Harvard referencing style is required

o As there is such an emphasis on the textbook, all in-text references for the textbook (both paraphrasing and direct quotes) should include a page number or the section number.

Introduction
The theory of the project focused to give transformational view on the operation of any business. In the traditional way the project in context of product development are short lived, unique and transient in nature. Almost in every other business irrespective of their goal and introduction of any organizational change, there are challenges, complexities and risk related to the integration of the project. In order to deal with those challenges there are some theories and practices of project management that could guide businesses or used as a framework of reference. As indicated by Conforto et al. (2016), project management has come a long way, as there are continuous change and methods being updated as changes in the external environment and requirements of it.
Project Management Principles and relating them with the Chosen Event
In this report, we discussed about one scenario or any industry where we can apply the project management theory and get significant outcomes. Project management is the special type of the production or operational management. There are three base theories of the project management: the dispatching model, management as planning and the thermostat model. The whole process of the project management is a dynamic procedure that facilitates utilization of the appropriate and scare resources of the organization in a controlled and structured way that would help in achieving stated objectives.
It is always conducted within a de- fined set of constraints. For this report I chose very famous and known event of communication and operational project failure of titanic ship, the failed applying project management theories as a result, the titanic ship sink. I personally did some research about this event and found that this event would be the best example for this study. In my experience, this event is every well knower and recognized by everyone, yet most of the people did not know about the failed implementation of project management theories. I did deep analysis in this report and conclude that have the company applied those principles and theories, that event would not had happen in history.
In my point of view, the titanic case study is a perfect example where the management could have applied the principal of the project management but they failed. The would be able to track the timely performance of the ship, report it effectively, figure out the weakness in the project and could even decrease the overall cost of the project. It is not always sure that the theory provides the readymade solutions to the business or leaders but it will surely help the leaders to cope up with some of the major challenges or reduce their impact on overall operations of the project.
Description of the Event
The RMS titanic set for sail from the shore Southampton bound for New York City carrying around 2,300 people. Afterwards everyone knows what happens in the event on the 14th April at 11:30 pm. After ship leaved the land after the four days, the ship was hit by an iceberg and it sank after 3 hours. Unfortunately, out of 2300 people only 705 were survivors. Seeing the event of titanic from the point of view of project management, it clearly shows how the decision made by their seniors related to ships’ design, sea trials and construction are responsible for happening of this event. The integrity left it vulnerable to disaster. The Republic sinking had a huge influence on Titanic's design.
In fact, had Titanic suffered a similar accident, she would probably not have sunk, as she had been designed to withstand a breach of up to four compartments. Furthermore, according to this line of thinking, there would be no need for a full complement of lifeboats on board, because rescue ships would never be far away and they would have them too, so there would be more than they would have enough too, so there would be more than enough. Titanic was a well-built passenger ship with few design flaws. The most prevalent cause of Project Management failure is...
