Module 1:
How social capital and resilience help to improve strength of the indigenous communities:
The concept of social capital and resilience helps to build strength of the indigenous communities. They come up in the society and resilience being the inner strength, helps the individuals to bounce back
and carry on in the face of adversity. Social capital helps to build resilience and makes an impact within the communities and become beneficial. But at times it is not uniform due to which few religious and ethnic minorities and other vulnerable groups are exposed to the vulnerability. Social capital is an individual asset and consists of an individual’s relationships to the available social resources. In the communities also many characteristics contribute in building the resilience and trust among the people and hence it enhances the collective efficacy also.
Social capital contributes in building the resilience and helps in recovery of the communities to organize themselves in the aftermath of a disaster. This is particularly true in groups exhibiting strong bridging social capital, because they often have networks that reach beyond the disaster-struck area, thereby giving them access to the much needed resources and support to get back to normalcy again. In general, the relationship between social capital and resilience is four dimensional in nature. It is seen that in each of these dimensions, we highlight the ability of resilience research to link evidence on community social capital with individual data and the recognition that individuals can be resilient even if the communities they live in have low or even negative social capital. The relationship between social capital and resilience is directly proportional to the case that it helps to build strength in the communities which are suppressed and face disasters. (RJ Ledogar & J Fleming,2008).
This is also seen that for social capital concept to be strong in the communities the bridging needs to be relevant as it allows as the medium between the individuals to pass information so that there are higher chances of individuals and communities working together to create associations that are beneficial for both the individual and the community. In this process the first step is to build the social connections which are aimed at directly influencing the resilience of the individuals by way of enhancing the physical and mental health conditions of the youth. This in a way indirectly influence the collective resilience of the community to get better. (Kirmayer et al. 2009; Ledogar and Fleming 2008). In this process the second step is to enhance the intergenerational knowledge transmission, by working on to improve the cultural connectedness of the youth in these communities to be together and build social relationships so that they can turn around even after a disaster or in any other adversities. (Ohmagari & Berkes, 1997).
