You are expected to act and work like a full-time employee, but you also have to balance school. It is almost impossible to find time for yourself, or your social life, and when you do, you are exhausted. With my position, I also feel like I always have to be close to my phone and computer so that I can put out fires and respond to things immediately if I need to, so I feel like I could be "back to work" at any minute of any day.

Dealing with difficult coaches who choose to remain difficult begins to drastically counterbalance any "rewards" over time. My boss is also very understanding about a work-life balance and told me to leave when my athletes are gone and enjoy myself.

It's different depending on what athletic department and what sport you work for, though. Some athletic departments and sports are less demanding than others. Work can be frustrating because sometimes you work a 13-hour day and accomplish the same amount of work that can be completed in under 10 hours. Athletic administrators need to focus on employees' mental health and work-life balance and avoid "burning them out". It's a demanding profession to work in intercollegiate athletics and you can find yourself in a detrimental mental and physical state if you do not make the effort to balance work with your social/family life.

I have noticed since starting this graduate assistantship, that most of the women in the department are in their 30's, 40's, and 50's and still do not have a family. To me, that is an unfortunate reality of being a woman working in collegiate athletics. It seems nearly impossible to be both a caregiver for your family and a coach or administrator for your university.

The student-athlete life is not 9-5 and one's decisions (as it related to work) impact those hours even after the allotted "official" work time. One must be responsive given this fact. A job in college athletics is married to the idea that a traditional 9-5 is, more or less the, antithesis. Honestly, there should be no set times for work given this fact. College athletics are was behind with regards to the modern work day. In a perfect world, drawing on many new age thought leaders, one should be required to commit to a solid 4 hour block ( think 11-3 or any variation) where the the focus is big picture, planning and collaboration and then a state of reactivity for the remaining hours. Then again, I'm not sure a business staff member works nearly at the same attention level as compliance/student services/academics. All and all, modifications can and should be made to catch us up to speed with our audience, reducing burnout, mental fatigue and promoting deep-work. Thanks!

Even when I'm at home I'm thinking about a coach calling or texting me about something. I dread every time my phone goes off because I know there's a greater than 50% chance it is about work no matter where I am or what I'm doing. Since the beginning of training camp two months ago I have not been grocery shopping, gotten a hair cut, furnished my apartment, registered my car or gotten it looked at (which it desperately needs). I wake up at 6:00 am, get to work at 7:15, stay there until 9:00 PM go home and go to sleep. Seven days a week. On game days I haven't gotten home before midnight yet. My work is unsatisfying. I got into my line of work to be around sports but I'm not really part of the team. I put in as much work as the coaches without actually having a connection to the games or players. I barely get to see any of the games. I'm considering changing careers but have put so much time and effort to get to where I am that I am afraid of throwing it all away.

We are asked to do more than we can accomplish in the time constraints of each day and then are forced to take work home. I see many colleagues arrive at the office well before 8 and these same colleagues staying until 10 PM.

I think the "work hard/win at all costs" mentality held by athletes and coaches trickles into administrator's positions. I've been in a medium-sized D3 department and a small D1 department and both have placed little value on work-life balance. I feel pressured to work more hours than I am paid for and will not put my own needs ahead of work. I feel that if I were to push back and work fewer hours, I would be seen as not doing my part or putting enough work in and would then receive a poor reference when I choose to move to another department. My social life and leisure time suffer greatly as a result of my position.

I wouldn't be working in this industry if I didn't love it, despite how frustrating it can be. However, there will come a point when I want to start a family that the salaries simply aren't enough for the lifestyle I will need to provide for them. College athletics needs to get rid of these 10- or 11-month positions with barely livable salaries and start paying people what they're worth or they will lose the best and brightest leaders before they even realize it.

Athletic departments take advantage of employees because it is a "Privilege" to work with student athletes. In my field, there is a small demand for coaches with a very large supply. There are 95+% of coaches in the nation that would do my job for 1/2 of what I make. Athletic departments are able to take advantage of employees because they know this. Work - Life balance is poor. I am lucky that I don't have a spouse or children right now because working 14 hour days, 7-days a week would make it very difficult to be a major part of their lives.

The longer I stay in this industry I have realized this: Great job; terrible profession. For every multi year contract for a head coach, there are hundreds of guys living at or below poverty all for the glory of the game. I've lived in my office on three different occasions not because I wanted to. I could not afford rent! Obviously you have to have passion to work in college coaching. My window has closed for a chance at a big time college program of in the NFL. However, I've done other jobs, made more money, and yet have been more miserable not being a leader or mentor of men.

There are slow times when coaches/senior admin take vacations that allow you to relax some. The demands are heavy and the true people that suffer are the spouses, friends and family members of the employees. I love what I do, I take great pride in it, however, I miss out on a lot of aspects of personal life because of the job and being understaffed and over delivering. Flex time would be a huge benefit if we could relax on the days that we don't have games, events, video shoots or other media related responsibilities.

My job, in particular is very time consuming. We are at every home athletic event whether it be at night, on the weekends, holidays etc. However, there are a couple jobs in administration where those who hold that position don't NEED to put in the additional hours. I have found that the last 5 years have been tough when it comes to games that fall on holidays such as Thanksgiving, New Years, Easter etc etc. because those are days that I have been raised to value and categorize as family time. So when I have to sacrifice time with family to be a good employee there is a bit of a resentment.

It's more about managing the time you have effectively and to prioritize the people in your life and occasionally check in with friends because you will not often have the opportunity to see them if they are more than a 30 mins to an hour drive.

Still, I work more than am legally allowed as a student (20 hours a week) and this puts a strain on me. I would get a second job to help with bills and such, but am only able to work certain hours of the day due to my time working with athletics and the commitment I have to put in with them. This position has caused me to question if I should stay working in athletics or if I should find something that I would be happier doing.

Smaller schools/departments, pay less but also expect you to perform more to cover the gaps that they can't hire others for. However, there is usually less pressure because the focus on winning isn't as extreme as in the power conferences.

I think a lot athletic departments forget about the facilities/event management departments. Not knowing just how much we put into everything and how that correlates into how much we work. In some instances, I'll work for almost a month straight without a full day off from work.
I also think that when the facilities/event management department are combined into one department, that can become very overwhelming. Having to just deal with events in season is one thing, add in the pressures of having to do facility projects and maintaining your facilities with your coaches can be challenging and extremely stressful.
For my hours worked, I put my approximate hours per week.

I do receive free housing but my stipend for the year is only $8,000 from August 1 to July 31. Larger institution expectations are starting to filter down to smaller institutions, but staffing numbers and salary increases are not. More people will start to be burned out with these demands and leave the industry. Student-athletes are always around and needing services, especially football and basketball and other sports are starting to follow suit. Lastly, the equipment room staffs are usually the smallest in increasingly expanding departments, leaving less personal time than ever.

With social media, and year-round recruiting for all sports, it will consume you unless you "choose" to take advantage of the benefits your school provides for you. You need to take those vacations and sick days and work from home when you need to, or just not come in when you get that break in the schedule between sports and not feel guilty about it. I just finished reading a book called "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" by Greg McKeown and I highly recommend it to all who work in Intercollegiate Athletics if you are seeking a way to find that delineation between "giving 110 percent" and "stopping to smell the roses." Thank you for letting me be a part of this survey and I hope see your published results at some point.

Often times you do not leave the job at work. There are many sleepless nights worrying about a student's progress, eligibility, or general well-being. Student-athletes need positive examples of healthy adults to help shape their work ideology.

I find it hard to quanity a certain amount of time that would be execptable for work-life balance. The equation most looked at is the life side. I believe our society is hyper-sentitive to the idea we need to have 50/50 balance.
The equation will always equal 100 for any individual. If its 50 + 50 = 100; that works for some people. Just because the equation goes 60/40 or 70/30 doesn't mean the equation is out of balance.
The main question of this whole topic is what value(s) does the individual have. With that data, we might be able to find trends within the values which could explain why/how people choose to live there life a certain way.

Being an equipment manager isn't as simple as people think it is, you wear many hats and cover everyone's back but often it goes unappreciated. I work both Football and Baseball seasons, and nearly all of those seasons I work 7 days a week. I love my job but I find myself envying those who only work 5 days a week and are guaranteed 2 days off a week. I can't remember the last time that I had 2 days off from work in a row. Athletics is a business where the Head Coaches dictate the lives of all their employees and if they decide to practice on a Sunday night, we as employees are required to be there no matter what. I may be young in this business, but I have missed more major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) than I can count.

It doesn't necessarily affect me all too much because of my social circumstances; single, 26, no children.
I do however often make mental note about situations related to work that would be quite an inconvenience if I did have a family or a spouse.
Great study, I am eager to see the final paper that is released. Please alert me when that happens:

For example, I feel like I do a lot in my current position that keeps me here after 5pm and on the weekends, but my earnings are fairly low. This realization is frustrating, and impacts my overall feelings about my position. Might be easier to justify late nights and weekends if I was being compensated accordinly.
Also, as a young professional in athletics, I have been told many times that I need to put in this extra time in order to "make my way up." This idea puts pressure on me to continue working hours beyond the 40-hour work week.

I believe I have a good work-life balance. I work long, hard hours in season but get enough time off out of season to feel rested and rejuvenated. I do not feel burned out nor do I believe that I will burn out. Also, the questions concerning athletic department stakeholders are unclear. I do not work or interact on a regular basis with donors, if that's what you mean by stakeholders. I answered based on the definition of stakeholders being coaches, administration, coworkers.

This could have been due to the culture of DIII institutions and the unrealistic expectations of DI. Since my transition back to DI I have struggled with this expectation that we are paying you (but not really compensating you) to be here/responsible for everything that goes on with this specific team.
I also feel that work-life balance is what you make it. As a professional you have to be willing to stay no or have a discussion with coaches/staff/department about what is realistic for you and for them and commit to it. That is one area that I feel many of my colleagues, especially young ATs struggle.

As Fall season ends it lightens up some. But in general I don't think its very healthy to go 24/7 for months and then compensate saying next month you get days off and 40-50hr week then back to 24/7.

Teaching does take up a larger part of the responsibilities which wasn't really addressed in these questions. But yeah teaching and precepting students definitely add to the work stress. Overall though by not being hired by or under the athletic department has been a huge advantage at my workplace.

Team "off days" were often during the school week, and were filled with patient appointments, meetings, and administrative work. Often times coaches were able to take that day completely off, but the department expectation was for us to be present and working, taking care of the student-athletes. Additionally, with respect to the hours during and out of season, the average hours per week during season is 65, NOT INCLUDING travel time with the team to and from contests; The hours per week out of season are still 40, due to the department expectation for us to "be here".
Something that often gets overlooked when discussing "work-life balance" is the challenge for young professionals who are single to have time to find a potential spouse. Research often addresses the "family strain", which can apply to immediate spouse and children, as well as parents and extended family. However, the time and "life" strain often make it very difficult to find time for oneself to even think about finding a spouse and many do not have work schedules conducive to this life opportunity.

Also, I have no idea what an athletic department stakeholder is. You should clarify these questions better.
2) Thankfully, at my school regardless of whether we are in or out of season, my boss typically schedules 1 day off/week for each AT. Our schedules are always flexible as there are only 4 of us, but he also allows us to swap shifts or change our times in the AT based on personal needs so long as every sport and the ATR gets appropriate coverage. That plays a HUGE role in work-life balance.
3) You could inquire about summer commitments and hours, and how that helps recharge an AT's energy for the school year. For instance, we have very limited hours during the summer, but don't have to take vacation for these hours. It's seen as compensation for the time we put in during the school year.

Sometimes I feel like athletics waits for no one and expects you to always be willing to sacrifice your personal wants and dreams for the greater good of the department. Family emergencies, personal plans, social life, mental health, and sometimes physical health seem to be second. I don't think it happens maliciously but the perceptions of an employee who may request or ask for some better way to work throughout the day or season may feel peer pressure not to just based on the culture of athletics. I feel like many people love the intercollegiate setting but get burned out just based on the workload and the overwhelming feeling of repeating the same work weeks, without a break, week in and week out. It takes special, motivated, and hardworking people to work in intercollegiate athletics but I think depending on the type of staff/ faculty that is present will dictate how well the work-life balance is perceived. I think that occasionally people forget that we are all human beings, working in life together to help one another. There is more to life than the next practice, next basketball game , and next winter conditioning session. I believe that if you have administration that truly values the well being of their employees they will find a way to ensure the work-life experience for their employees are met. It is different for every employee and every institution but there are mandates for the athletes to have a specific days off and a specific amount of hours spent with or without their sport but for some employees there are no days off.

At the FCS level, we are so understaffed a majority of our athletic trainers do not have an off season. We travel year round or provide coverage for other sports outside of our main sport. If we have any off time it may be one month where we have down time, but we are never really off of work. In addition to our work as athletic trainers, a majority of us attempt to fill other voids within the athletic department such as nutrition counseling, mental health counseling, medical billing and insurance, and other aspects that the FBS level has specifically hired separate individuals for those positions. Taking on all of the additional roles are what removes the desire to complete our actual work.

I understand that coaches have more pressure and exposure, but athletic trainers often put in similar amounts of time, are subject to coach's change of schedule at all times (usually at the last minute), are often "on call" 24 hours per day, and are normally paid 25% or less of what the coach is. This dynamic is sometimes frustrating, especially when athletic administration doesn't realize or support what the sports medicine staff is doing.

Most people who work in athletics truly love their job or else they wouldn't do it. However, it would be nice to be compensated out of season for all the extra time we put in during season. For different people, that may mean monitary compensation while others would prefer time off. Either way, there should be some kind of compensation or at least an acknowledgement of all the hours, time, and commitment put into doing a job well done.

For the question about hours in season do you work I wasn’t sure if you meant total or per day. I usually work 8-13 per day in season and 7-10 per day out of season. I am rarely out of season though because I have fall, winter, and spring sport assignments.
