Now that you have a good understanding of the fundamental concepts of chemistry, you can begin to understand some of the chemistry behind everyday phenomena. For this Assignment, you will research the real world applications behind chemical concepts and how these applications affect the world around you. For example, if you choose to discuss chemistry in the kitchen, you may describe why ice floats in your favorite beverage, what chemical interactions are taking place when you cut an onion and it makes you cry, or even what happens to butter when you place it in the microwave as part of your favorite recipe.


Select a real world application of interest to you. Conduct some research on the topic and how chemistry applies to it. Below are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change

  • Air Quality

  • Smartphones

  • Swimming Pool Chemistry

  • Food Processing in the Body

After you have selected your topic, compose a 700-900 word essay that addresses the following:



  1. Which topic did you select? Provide background information on it.

  2. Discuss how chemistry is applied to your real world topic.

  3. Provide at least 2-3 different chemical interactions that occur as they relate to your topic.

  4. Explain the underlying chemical concepts behind these interactions.

  5. How has your newfound understanding of chemistry helped you to better understand your selected topic?
