1. Use of Adjunct Oxygen Therapy
Mr Vernon Watkins has received a hemicolectomy 4 days ago and therefore has a midline abdominal incision. Due to this, he was facing respiratory troubles. As I reached the patient, I first performed a usual hygiene routine and I made the patient sit, further my first analysis was to note his current heart beat which was 115 beats per minute that is higher than usual. Then in order to monitor the saturated oxygen levels in his blood, which needed to be maintained at 92%, I attached an oxygen saturation monitor in order, which reflected the saturated oxygen levels at 90%.
Since the medical officer or the doctor has mentioned to maintain a continuous 92% oxygen saturation rate; therefore, low oxygen percentage was the reason behind the pain and difficulty in breathing. Further, as proposed by Messika, Goutorbe, Hajage and Ricard (2017), I had to provide the patient with adjunct oxygen therapy. I attached a simple facemask and provided a low-dose oxygen flow.
This was because Mr Watkins only required a slight increase in his oxygen saturation level, which was 2%; therefore, the delivery rate was kept at 7 Litres of oxygen per minute. After a few minutes of the therapy the heart beat rate starts to fall and came near to normal along with the significant increase in the oxygen saturation levels which further resulted in normal breathing level and reduced chest pain (Weinberg, Tapson & Ramzy, 2017).
