Part I :Answer one of the following:A) includes an original idea or a unique and thoughtful response to a posted question/main assignment; B) is well-written and in excess of 300 words (but does not exceed 500 words, exclusive of citations); and C) includes at least two (2) citations from reputable, i.e., scholarly, sources (at least one of these sources must be one of the assigned texts/articles from the module, while the other must be from a verifiable and valid academic resource).

  1. Looking back at the early 2000s, critically assess where the world is with the "five wars of globalization" (Naim) and are there any new wars that have emerged since the writing of the article.

  2. Steger examines the role of human perception in the construct of globalization. Interpret why this is important for our own understanding of the concept.

  3. Provide a brief overview of one of the three texts mentioned in the opening paragraph of the textbook(i.e., Huntington, Barber, and Friedman) and make specific references to how this work has contributed to popular understandings of the so-called global imaginary.

  4. Employing Clifford's article, describe the geographic scales that anyone examining the phenomenon of globalization should consider.

  5. Distinguish the following concepts: globalization, globalism, and globality.

  6. Using James and Steger's article, argue which academic field is best situated to study globalization and why.

  7. Referencing Adbi's article, critically assess the impact of globalization on Africa and how this differs from its impact on a country like the U.S.

  8. Assess previous periods of "globalization" and identify what make the current one special and why.

Part II:

"Where globalization means, as it so often does, that the rich and powerful now have new means to further enrich and empower themselves at the cost of the poorer and weaker, we have a responsibility to protest in the name of universal freedom." ~ Nelson Mandela

MAIN ASSIGNMENT:

Assess the quality of Steger's definition of "globalization" (p. 15), identifying areas where it overlaps your own understanding of the concept and assessing weaknesses and blind spots that it fails to address. You are encouraged to include a few sentences about how globalization affects your own everyday identity, routine, existence, etc.

Part III:a thoughtful critique or substantive response to the post below (you may choose to take a critical stance or support an existing post with additional data, cases, and/or arguments)and youpost require two citations at a minimum.

Post:Understanding GlobalizationCOLLAPSE

Over decades, globalization has had a variety of definitions. Steger himself couldn’t even come up with a single definition to define globalization. One definition states that it is a process or set of processes which embodies a transformation in the spatial organization of social relations and transactions. Another definition refers to both the compression of the world and intensification of consciousness of the world as a whole (Steger,15). Both those definitions deal with social relations and global community. A weakness in regards to the concept of globalization is there is no clear understanding of where this concept came from and what the actual definition is. This creates many blind spots because many people are using this concept to describe different contextual ideas. When I think of the word globalization, I define it as social or economic change that affects everyone globally. In the article, “A Genealogy of Globalization: The Career of a Concept,” there are four different levels of globalization. One level is ideologies regarding political territory and another level that deals with social change in time, space and other dimensions of social relations (P. James & M.B Steger, 432).The two levels are similar to my definition however, there are two more levels that are discussed in the article.

Globalization affects everyone every day. You wake up and go to the grocery store to buy some food. The prices at the store you go to is different than if you went to a grocery store in Japan. Globally there is a difference on how a product is valued. When a tragic event such as 9/11 occurred, the event was broadcasted all over the news globally because it was a terrorist attack that affected everyone’s life. Both of these examples coincide with Steger’s two definitions with what globalization is. It is hard to define globalization in one sentence, but Steger does an accurate assessment with his two definitions

5. Differentiating between Globality, Globalization and Globalism
As suggested by Krugman, globalization can be defined as the process in which organization of the world start interacting and conducting their businesses on international level. Globalization is a process in which interaction and integration of the people, organizations and government occur. This process is accomplished by investment, information technology, and international trade. Globalization occur due to interdependencies of the world’s economies and population. It is a form of capitalist expansion that is helpful in growth of the national businesses and provide them international platform to perform. Globalization has benefited society as a whole. It allows the world to share technology, goods and services, raw material and cheap labor for the business.
As mentioned by Maghroori, globalism can be defined as the process of formation of national policy with consideration of its impact on the global level. Nowadays, all the countries in the world formed the economic policies and foreign policies, which have positive impact on all the countries, which are in relation with the country or conducting business with them. The globalism is opposite of the nationalism as it favored the opening of borders and development of policies which can be helpful to foreign nationals also. Globalism is an ideology, which favor the mutual benefit of all the nations.
