Shaunta Wilson:

An effective way to achieve what you want from another person is through negotiation. However, the negotiating process varies depending on the culture. Negotiation is a process in which two or more entities come together to discuss common and conflicting interests in order to reach an agreement of mutual benefit (Abramson et al., 2018). Some of the key traits of successful negotiators are being comfortable with conflict, understanding different cultures, and having well-developed negotiation skills. Today I will discuss a political figure who was one of the greatest negotiators of the twentieth century.

The late Nelson Mandela is one of the best negotiators in history. He used his negotiation skills to bring an end to the unjust Apartheid government and bring about the long-desired racial healing in South Africa. His approach to negotiation was an emotional and logical one which was to work with those who were against him. He had a great ability to persuade his counterparts with persuasive arguments like the ethical duty of South Africa. When Nelson Mandela was in prison, he had an opportunity to be released under conditions. The condition was that “he renounced the armed struggle and agreed to return to his hometown of Qunu”(Parham, 2021). Being the negotiator that he is Mandela struck down that offer and sought out an alternative. One of the things that makes him a successful negotiator is his willingness to look for alternatives when a negotiation approaches an impasse. Ultimately, Mandela was able to accomplish great things without violence which makes him one of the best negotiators of all time.

Brandy Llano:

Negotiation, according to the internet is the involvement of two or more people who come together to reach some end goal through compromise or resolution that is agreeable to all those involved. (Kenton,Negotiation definition2022). There are many steps in negotiations. The first is finding out everything that you can about the other party and their position on the issue at hand. Negotiations can take a few minutes or they can take much longer. The negotiation ends when both parties are happy and satisfied with the outcome.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. He was an Indian lawyer, social activist, and writer. He came to be known as the father and India and was also the leader of the nationalist movement against the British rule of India. Aside from these many titles, there is one that he was lesser know for...a negotiator. Martin Luther King Jr stated that he was inescapable if humanity is to progress. (Karmhe,Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi: The Underrated Negotiation Genius2020). Gandhi understood human beings and the complexities of their needs. Gandhi felt that compromise comes into being from the engagement of people who will eventually learn to care about the compromise as they are the creators of it. He was able to successfully negotiate many cases when he was an attorney. He had a positive attitude and was able to put the parties at ease so that they could come to a mutual agreement that was beneficial to all. He did not shy away from negotiations and was able to after a series of negotiations, reach an agreement that was in favor of his people.

You mentioned is correct that when you want anything you need to negotiate with the
other person, but this is the wrong negotiation that works well when both parties have some consideration to play in. When both parties are involved and get something out of the exchange then negotiation works well.
To become a good negotiator, one must develop soft skills, like communication, being emphatic and knowledge about different cultures when dealing with people from different cultures during a trade.
The example used by the peer is right on point as Nelson Mandel was one of the biggest negotiators as he not only negotiated with the people but also negotiated well with the...
