STAT-245 Lab #3 (Winter 2022) Measuring the Acceleration Due to Gravity Using a Simple Pendulum Period of a Pendulum The period of a pendulum can be found as: 2 LT g π= where L = length of the pendulum g = acceleration due to gravity (i.e. the gravity field strength) T = period (time for one oscillation) Experimental Procedure 1. Build a pendulum that is approximately 20-60 cm in length. A pendulum consists of a piece of string (or a cord) that is attached to a mass at one end. The length of the pendulum is taken from where you will hold it to the center of mass. Take a picture of your pendulum and include it in the lab report. (5 points) 2. Lift the pendulum to a starting angle of about 20 degrees or less (accuracy not that important). Using a timer, determine how long it takes for 5 complete swings. This allows you to lower the relative error of human reaction time. 3. Repeat this process 15 times, recording your results to the nearest 100th of a second. 4. Record your raw data in an excel workbook. Answer the following questions within that file. (5 points) 5. Describe this data set, using the terminology we have learned in this course. (5 points) 6. Use excel to determine the following: a. The coefficient of variation. (3 points) b. Make a boxplot of the data. Is it skewed? (5 points) c. The 90 percent confidence interval of the period of your pendulum. (5 points) d. The 95 percent confidence interval of the acceleration due to gravity. (5 points) e. What sample size is needed to be 99% confident that your result is accurate to within 0.02 m/s2 ? (5 points) f. Conduct a formal hypothesis test to show that the acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s2. (use α =0.05) (6 points) g. Write a 200-word conclusion to comment on your results and identify ways to improve the experiment. (8 points) 7. As this lab is the final one of the semester, it is worth 10% of your final grade. It is due April 22nd at 11:59 pm.
