Executing on Innovation: Design the Process From Idea to Value FOUNDATIONAL Refreshed: 3 March 2020 | Published: 30 November 2018 ID: G00367587 Analyst(s): Jackie Fenn, David Cearley, Erik Van Ommeren As part of creating an innovation competency, CIOs need to design an innovation process that moves ideas from inception to demonstrable business value. This research presents the choices at each stage and provides examples of innovation processes targeting different goals. FOUNDATIONAL DOCUMENT This research is reviewed periodically for accuracy. Last reviewed on 3 March 2020. Key Findings ■ To deliver a repeatable stream of innovation, CIOs need to define a process to make sure their organization is not missing critical stages of activity and to avoid common “drop points” (for example, moving beyond a successful proof of concept). ■ There is no single “correct” innovation process, but most contain core stages of generating ideas, evaluating ideas and realizing the value of an innovation. ■ CIOs face a growing number of choices regarding how to perform each stage of the innovation process. Recommendations To drive innovation and strategic business change, CIOs should take these steps: ■ Create or adopt an innovation process that embodies just enough formality to meet business and innovation goals. Local, incremental innovation may need just a lightweight process to make sure ideas move forward, whereas new products and business models require a process with defined governance and significant levels of evaluation. ■ Align your process with your approach to innovation: trigger-centric (driven by technologies, trends or other external inspiration), problem-centric (targeting a specific business issue or This research note is restricted to the personal use of [email protected]. For multiple approaches, you may need more than one process, or multiple paths within a single overarching process. ■ Experiment with different approaches at each stage of the process to see what works best for your innovation goals and in your organizational context.
