PROJECT: Measures of Center and Variation   Chapter 11 “Kilgore stood, donning a mask and latex gloves for his examination…and filling four five cc test tubes… Next he took the blood samples off for testing.”   One of the tests performed on the blood samples monitors the level of the liver enzyme alanine aminotramsferase (ALT). The ALT enzyme normally exists in the liver. If the liver is damaged, the liver cells spill the enzyme into the blood stream, signaling liver damage. Normal ALT levels range from 2 to 60 units per liter (UL). Abnormally high levels can reach into the thousands. This level usually indicates liver disease and an increased death risk either by the shutdown of the liver or other causes.   Part I: Perform the following operations using the 28 ALT levels as data ALT (UL) of the male patient before exposure to the Ebola-Shiva virus. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 30 23 27 35 40 47 36 32 22 28 37 42 47 35 28 24 29 38 41 43 34 26 28 33 38 44 39 32     A.  Organize the data. C.  Use your calculator or software to calculate the following descriptive statistics. Mean Mode Sample Std Dev (Sx) Min Value First Quartile Median Third Quartile Max Value Range D.  Which measure of "Average", median or mean, do you believe best describes the ALT level?  Why?          F. The Normal ALT range is 2-60 (UL). Does the measure of “average” you chose fall within this range?     G.  Construct a boxplot.  Determine which data values, if any, are outliers (values more than 2 std dev away from the mean).
