Introduction
The year 2020, was engulfed in its entirety by an unprecedented happening that took the world by storm resulting in a chilling silence that followed. Covid-19 or the novel Coronavirus created a pandemic that began in 2019 starting from China, but spreading indiscriminately in nearly all countries of the world. The disease caused not only severe pain and impairment, it also resulted in high cases of deaths in a never-before-seen manner. The impact of Covid-19 crossed not only boundaries; it covered all individuals as well as industries (Dube, Nhamo and Chikodzi, 2020).
The hospitality industry that is highly reliant on tourists, took one of the severest blows. Tourists form the centre of most hospitality industries and with travel bans, border closures, events cancellations, quarantine requirements and fear of spread, brought extreme challenges on tourism and hospitality sectors resulting in the industry incurring tremendous loss (Alonso et al, 2020).
In view of the fact that a similar crisis could strike again in the future, the hospitality industry needs to discover new ways to survive or if possible, even thrive, in such circumstances. There is thus a need for the industries in the hospitality sector to have some level of preparedness to suffer this amount of loss from happening in the future. Companies can make use of innovative ways including technology and sustainability in order to effectively cope with any such situation that could arise in the future and this time with preparedness.
Implications for hospitality sector
The hospitality industry has been impacted in a range of ways due to Covid-19. This impact has largely been due to actions that have been taken by governments as well as individuals to stop the spread of infection (Baum and Hai, 2020). These actions have had a severe impact on the various activities in the tourism industry. What follows is a list of these actions along with the explanation of the impact.
Impact of lock down
Lock down imposed by the government to curb the Coronavirus spread has resulted in people staying indoors. This has left several hospitality industries in a complete stranded state especially the tourism industry, hotel industry and transport industry that thrived and flourished through the activity of people. Many small companies had to shut down while those in better state had to incur huge losses (IANS, 2020).
Impact of travel restrictions
Travel restrictions come in line with the lock down imposed by governments. Travel restrictions mainly impacted the aviation industry. Foreign travellers form the back bone of this industry. With no travellers and foreign tourists visiting the country, or going out of the country, the aviation industry suffered losses in billions of dollars. This took place...
