Discussion Questions
1. I am from
I am from a big cozy sofa which looks like a hugging bear.
I am from the smell of wood and which keep me happy.
I am from Monica Gomes that kept me like cotton candy.
I am from " A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink".
I am from biriyani, kabab, naan and butter chicken with big family get together.
I am from family vacations to the 7th wonder of the world Taj Mahal.
I am from an old family photo album full of wonderful childhood memories.
2. Habits of mind and the science of learning
I came here to the United State in
2016 it was not easy for me. I just came here because it was my husband's last wish who died in 2015, in the USA military service.
I know, now you will say how come is related to learn something. it was so hard for me to learn about US culture, especially when I was going through grieving of my husband's death and when you don't know anyone in the USA. I just came here to follow my husband's dream. Every time it was so hard to understand people, there slangs, food and another thing are learn how to live alone because back to my country, from childhood I just lived with a houseful of the family but slowly I tried to be flexible for everything. Whenever I was not able to understand people accent or there slangs I used to ask very politely and note down those so next time I can understand what they are trying to say then my another way to learn watch American series in Netflix and search those word what I don't understand in Google which is my best friend and then I got a few American friends who helped me lot in so many things they took me to there home so I can easily understand their culture and food they just made me feel so welcome that now they are kind my family. But still there is so many time I just felt to quit but then I searched a strong reason to be here which is my study for Nursing.
In 2017, I joined for my pre-nursing at Alamo College but that was even not easy for me because I did a bachelor in History in 2018. I finished my study 11 years before and after that, I just worked and never study so I was totally out from all study habits. In my first semester concentrate, sit in one place and study was a difficult task for me and I was never good in science. But then I took responsibility and prepared a time table to sit and study. Then I got some student who has a kind of the same problem as me we made our study group so we can help each other that helped me a lot because that was a study with fun. I started to spend my more time in college so I can be in an environment where I can study more. Now I am in the USA from last 3 years and this is my last semester.
So I believe it's very important in your life to be flexible and responsible because these two things made my life better.
3. Learning stories
The literacy narratives, "I Just Wanna Be Average" by Rose, Lost and Found by Barry, and "Mother Goose in Monterrey" by Gomez are about exploration of experiences with reading and writing. English literacy narrative explains and helps us how to speak learn and write.
As described by Rose in "I Just Wanna Be Average," school systems have been known to write off individuals with tremendous undiscovered potential. In "Mother Goose in Monterrey" by Gomez, she describes and uses an example by Rose's literary work that contrasts what it means to be illiterate.
The strongest memory that I have of reading and writing was in my childhood I use to go by bus to my school because I am a single parent-child and my mom she goes for her work. Somewhere I knew that I am not interested in studies rather than dancing and makeup or u can say I love to play with colors. I am from India and I love India a lot but there people thinking is like “ if you will not study hard u will not get a proper job or good admission for future college and so many things”. Their parents use to compare you with other children’s. One day I went for admission to English school. English school means where the main language is English but in India mother tongue is Hindi. So I was from a Hindi school and it was my dream to study in English school, so I gave an entrance exam and my result is that I am not eligible for that school. That day I decided the after one month I will give the examination again for the school so I went to my church father and ask for help that I want to learn English and he help me and teach me English. In one month I tried my best to learn as much as I can learn and I use to study day night so I get admission in that school. The day when I was having my entrance exam was so challenging for me and at last, I qualify the entrance exam and got an admission that school.
4. Listen and respond
The author wants to show different ways to think and deal with the situation in a positive way by making wiser choices instead of thinking all the negativity which leads to nowhere only frustration.
The author explains everyone going through ups and downs those emotions affect their behavior in public do not judge them on their actions or verbal communication. Train our brain to react positively instead of jumping on conclusion what they are seeing. Ethos means the person who holds high moral status and strong ethics and has an ethical appeal.
Pathos is all about awakening emotions with speech, and it has an emotional appeal Lagos is about logic, facts, reason, and realism and is the appeal to logic.
In Dr. Wallace speech he tried to convince the audience by giving ethical things what we need to do in these situations by using pathos example “In aisle lady yelling at kid maybe she has a bigger problem in her life which made her react”; Moreover, explaining all these examples in logos way.
Ethos and Lagos value of appeal is the most in our Profession as it shows the credible source that is ethical and would cite facts and statistics, historical and literal analogies to be logical.Pathos is the least appeal as it invokes sympathy from the audience. It is used to draw pity and anger as a byproduct.
Note
The four discussions presented above have been a lot of boost to my confidence in writing and expression myself as well as my opinion. It gives a voice which I have been hesitating due to the barrier in language. Learning English language is crucial to me. The first discussion on ‘I am from’ expresses who I am and where I originally belong. It basically describe myself in a gist. This being the start of all identification and conversation with people, this project was a huge experience. The next discussion engaged me to write about my hardships and how I dealt with it. These writing not only experience writing in itself but I love the very fact that it tells a story. The deeper meaning engraved within words and sentences are the essence of it all. Moving on from personal to a more literary form, I am drawn to the fact that the third and fourth writing incorporate texts from literary source with my personal experiences. This gives a broader perspective and opens up a wider spectrum in writing and reflection. These writing not only help myself to pour out from inside but also take in what other’s...
