MA460 Finite Element Methods Page 1 of 2 RMIT University, School of Science, Mathematics Math2114 – Numerical Methods & Statistics for Engineers Assignment 3 (Stats) Due: Friday 17:00 pm, 11th October (Week 11), Semester 2, 2019 This assignment contributes 4% towards the assessment for the subject. The Assignment reports should be in the PDF format, and must be individual and submitted online via course Canvas under the tab: Assignments. Late assignments will not be marked, unless a special consideration is granted prior to the due day for a later submission. Instructions: - The following list of questions is based on the material covered in the text book Chapters 7, 8 and 9. Please work through these problems and present your calculations and/or Excel output where required. - You will need to create a Microsoft Word document, copy your Excel output in the form of tables into the word document, or take a screen shot and then insert the image into the word document, as well as present your written answers to the questions in the report. - At the completion of the report, save it to a .pdf file and submit it online to the Canvas. - Total 10 marks. This week, we’re going to look at some of the responses gathered by a class survey. You can find this in ClassSurvey.xlsx. There are two worksheets: • Responses is the main sheet and contains a cleaned copy of the survey responses • Hours Studied contains two columns showing the hours studied, one column for civil engineering students and one for chemical engineering students. Question 1 (Sample Size required 1.5 marks) Let’s examine the proportion of women in this class vs men. 1a). Find the 95% confidence interval for the proportion of this class who are women. (0.5 marks) HINT: Create a pivot table, and exclude observations where the response was either blank or “Prefer not to say” HINT: Remember, the variance for the proportion is given by ??(1 − ??). This can be used to calculate Standard Deviation, and Standard Error. HINT: Because ?? is known, use Z critical values, not T critical values. 1b). Assuming that your sample estimate is accurate, how large would the sample need to be for the 95% confidence interval to have a maximum error of ±5%? (1 mark) HINT: Error e=5%=0.05 Page 2 of 2 Question 2 (One Sample Hypothesis Test 5 marks) Test the belief that, on average, it takes a student more than 30 minutes to get to university each day, using ?? = 0.05: a. State the null and alternative hypotheses (1 mark) b. Calculate the test statistic (1 mark) HINT: We have a large sample, so we can use the Normal distribution (as T approaches Z as the degrees of freedom increases) c. Calculate the critical value (1 mark) d. Draw a conclusion based on this result (1 mark) e. State your conclusion in real world terms (1 mark) Question 3 (Two Sample Hypothesis Test 3.5 marks) Test to see if there is a difference in the average number of hours studied depending on if you are a chemical engineering student or are a civil engineering student. This data is prepared for you in the Hours Studied worksheet: a. Examine the ratio between variances to see if it appears safe to assume equal variance between the two groups (0.5 mark) b. Perform a two-sample hypothesis test to examine if the average number of hours studied is different between the two student groups (using ?? = 0.05). Follow all the steps of hypothesis testing, including stating your null and alternative hypotheses and drawing a “real-world” conclusion. (1.5 marks) HINT: The Analysis Toolpak can do this for you. c. Are we making any assumptions about the distribution of our data? Are these assumptions valid? If not, how might this impact on your results? (1.5 mark) Responses TimestampWhat's your age? What's your gender?Which of these categories apply to your program?CivilChemicalWould you describe yourself as a morning person, or an evening person? On average, how many hours of study do you do each week?On average, how many minutes does it take for you to get to university from where you live?In general, do you bring lunch to university, or buy it?On a scale from 1 to 10, how excited are you about statistics? On a scale from 1 to 10, how useful do you think statistics will be in your career? What's an engineering project/problem that you think is really cool?If you got to pick the data you wanted to work with for this class, what applications/areas would you be interested in looking at? (Literally anything from "real world" problems through to pop culture stuff, data is data. Safe for work things only though, I don't want to lose my job ._. )If the response dataset for this survey were to be distributed to the class, would you be happy to have your response included?
