Introduction
Tourism has been an important economic sector for Egypt that generates effective foreign exchange and creates employment promoting development and equality to alleviate poverty. The beaches and the climate of the Red Sea are spectacular that attracts foreign tourists as well as domestic tourist. But it is evident to note that the entire setting is based on a fragile marine environment that needs to be protected to ensure the long-term viability of the tourism in the street of the Red Sea of Egypt. Tourism Development in this region begins in the late 19th century which significantly caused the destruction of the natural composition of the beach line, integration of natural and man-made areas, damaging a greater part of the marine environment and particularly the coral reefs. This has increasingly developed the conflict with the protection and conservation of the Red Sea resources. Hence, in order to assure the future of tourism development in the Red Sea, it needs to effectively focus on sustainable tourism development by preserving the environmental resources of this region. This discussion shall effectively focus on the alternative forms of tourism activity in the region of the Red Sea that meets the criteria of sustainability in tourism. The possible challenges faced by this part of Egypt shall be effectively elaborated. A cohesive course of action that can be undertaken for the challenges shall be identified.
Sustainability Development in Red Sea Tourism
Coastal tourism mainly depends on environmental opportunities. Hence the quality of the environment and the other components of tourism must be significantly protected in order to ensure the long-term growth of the development of the tourism industry in this part. This part of the world contains a significant proportion of the world's reserve for coral reefs and has an associated ecosystem for mangroves. The hinterland of the coast is populated by rugged mountains which run parallel to the shore and creates a watershed with extensive delta and alluvial plains (Gohar et al., 2018).
The tourism industry is now greatly focusing on the aspect of eco-tourism by connecting the traditional antiquities-based tourism in upper Egypt with the recreational activities of the Red Sea. This connection is inevitably a potential way to enhance the attractions for the tourist and improve the economic well-being of Egypt (Hilmi et al., 2018). Moreover, the concept of eco-tourism has extensively focused on the aspect of conservation of the environment and a way of sustaining the well-being of the local people. The significant association between ecotourism and the traditional tourism in this part of Egypt will authentically provide a personal experience that is unit to this particular region with a combination of environmental and cultural activities. Adoption of elements of ecotourism will enhance the respect for the local cultures, traditions, and historic sites. But will also protect the economically feasible aspect that helps to attract financing and sustain business operations. However, it is overwhelming that the extensive engagement of the natural ecosystem will have a negative impact and destroy the wildlife habitats because of frequent human engagement. This particular feature typically does not meet the criteria for sustainable tourism development. Tourism activities are also conducted under the influence of the Egypt Environmental Policy Program held for the enhanced management and conservation of the Red Sea. Green Hotel campaigns are practiced extensively in recent times along the sea coast of the Red Sea. These particular aspects have immensely contributed to the sustainable development of the Red Sea of Egypt.
Socio-Economic Challenges of Tourism in Red Sea
Tourism development started in the 20th century in Egypt. Traditional tourism consumed a significant part of the sea coast of the Red Sea and has extensively destroyed the environmental resources for the purpose of the development of the area. Extensive land was exploited and the shore was filled with the establishment and hotels. Resorts were constructed and the beach was destructed which significantly enhance the pollution of those places and made it unsafe for diving operations and the marine ecosystem.
