UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA ENGINEERING MATERIALS TECHNICAL WRITING REPORT Page 1 Brief The aim of this activity is to solve simple engineering and material selection problems, and to develop writing and communication skills. A high performance racing catamaran is being designed. The total width of the catamaran is 7m, and the maximum compression load on the mast is expected to be 1000kg. Maximum deflection of the beam should not exceed 50mm. The load on the 15m wire stays is expected to be a maximum of 600kg each. The mass of the hulls and mast together is 500kg (not including the beam and stays). The catamaran will be lifted out of the water each day by a crane using a single lifting point. The lifting wire must be strong enough to lift the combined weight of the hulls, mast, beam and stays. You must: 1. Specify the material to be used for the beam and calculate the diameter. Assume the beam is cylindrical with 1000kg load applied in the middle. 2. Specify the material to be used for the wire stays and calculate the diameter. 3. Specify the material and diameter to be used for a wire to lift the catamaran out of the water. Choose appropriate safety factors for each. Figure 1. Diagram of components to be designed. ENGINEERING MATERIALS TECHNICAL WRITING REPORT Page 2 Remember: 1. Your report should contain the following sections: Title and authors Executive Summary (approx. 100 words) Discussion (approx. 200-250 words for each design element) Conclusions (approx. 100 words) References (approx. 6-10) Appendix (include all calculations/tables etc for each element) 2. You should discuss why you choose certain materials and sizes for the application instead of the alternatives listed below in Table 1. ENGINEERING MATERIALS TECHNICAL WRITING REPORT Page 3 Table 1. his report focuses on Material selection for the Racing catamaran that is being designed. The complete dimension of the catamaran is provided and the various loads acting on different design elements are given. The different design elements of the Catamaran for which the material selection is to be carried out are the Beam, the Wire stay, and the Lifting wire. It is also required to determine the appropriate dimensions of this element and to select the appropriate materials as per the different variables such as the loading conditions, stiffness requirements, durability, density, cost, manufacturability, availability, weight to strength ratio, load repeatability, etc. (Punete, et al, 2016)
Discussion:
In this section, a detailed discussion will be put forth regarding the Selection process of material and Diameter for each design elements such as the Beam, the Wire stay, and the Lifting wire.
Design Element 1: Beam
The beam is the most important and backbone of a Catamaran, the beam is the element which is being exposed to all the loads acting on the hull. The loads that are acting on the hull transfer through the beam only, thus the beam is subjected to bending and axial stresses due to the mast which is of 1000 Kg. (Polyakov, and Pushkarev, 2019)
The beam material must be selected based on these properties presented under the material selection criteria for the beam:
1. Design/ Structural Needs:
· Good Strength
· High Strength to weight ratio
· Ability to withstand Fatigue loading
· Load repeatability
2. Environmental effects:
· Must be operation able in all climates.
· Must have good resistance towards corrosion.
· Fire resistance required.

3.Manufacturing cost:
· Material availability
· Manufacturability
· Less manufacturing cost
Now,
The materials which satisfy all these above-mentioned properties selected from the Materials available to be selected TableA1 (Appendix A) are Titanium alloy and Steel.
Let us critically analyze the different Material selection criteria in each and select one among them.

    Medium to Low
Table 1. Material for beam
From the table, it is clear that steel satisfies the material selection criteria better than that of the Titanium alloy so that Steel is selected.
Selected Material: Steel
Properties:
The diameter that is required for the beam is calculated to be113.16 mm (Calculations are provided in Appendix B)

Design Element 2: Wire Stay
The second element is the Wire stay which is responsible to keep the Mast...
