The discovery of America and that of the passage to the East Indies by the Cape of Good Hope, are the two (2) greatest events recorded in the history of [human] kind” – Adam Smith, inThe Wealth of Nations,1776. Think about why he and many other notables supported this statement, especially concerning the discovery of America. What was so important about this New World across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe?     The exchange between New World formed with America and Oceania and the Old World— Europe, Asia, revolutionized the course of human civilization. The political, socio-cultural and economic systems were redesigned, which are worth discussion for better assessment of the development pattern of human interaction.
Three Major Aspects of Old and New World Exchange
Disease Spread
    As the New World was geographically detached from the Old World people, there was significant lack of immunity among the New World people against diseases that existed in the Old World. Therefore, when the exchange took place, huge number of New World people was exposed to diseases, to which they were vulnerable. As a result, significant percentages of indigenous people died and even some communities got extinct. The lack of immunity caused widespread diseases in the New World, while the Old World marveling over their superior immunity, faced no such issues on their side (National Humanities Centre, 2001).
Mercantilism
    Taking full advantage of the lack of immunity among the New World people and the lack of knowledge about the global trade, the Old World business organizations started extracting the resources from New World, undermining their potential of developing indigenous industries (Smith, 1776).
