The painting "The Melancholy and Mystery of the s
treet" (1914) is a work by Giorgio De Chirico that is set in an empty street with two shadows lurking around. There is an empty cart and two buildings with numerous doors. The building closer to the viewer is dark and shaded while the other building hoisting a flag on its far end is set in light. The painting is characteristic in that it gives an overall impression of loneliness yet hope.
