Executive Summary
Travel and tourism is a well owned and a large-scale business spreading all over the globe. Travel and tourism are interlinked and therefore, wi
thout travel there is no tourism. Sustaining tourism is a very new concept with the basic idea of visiting new place and trying to influence the environment positively along with the society and economy. Through this assessment, a literature review will be presented criticising and promoting the concepts and strategies used in the articles used in assessment 2. Along with this, a major focus will be towards how the contemporary issues are affecting the concept of sustainable tourism and simultaneous impacts on the stakeholders and various management processes. All the articles were examined using a standardised critiquing method. The analyses show that different authors consider sustainable tourism development as a difficult concept to achieve but nevertheless, achievable and therefore worth implementing.
Introduction
Tourism and sustainable tourism are not two different concepts instead sustainable tourism is a modification that means eradicating the negativity that the tourism may lead to. Since tourism is one of the fastest growing industry and is also a major source of income for the countries; therefore, tourism industry faces certain problems such as social dislocation, cultural or heritage loss, ecological degradation and much more. Sustainable tourism focuses towards the eradicating these issues without effecting the tourism experience of the individual. Instead, it achieves this by generating awareness regarding the issues, promoting personal commitment and other preventive measures (UNESCO).
Research strategy
In order to extract data for the literature review numerous research papers and journal articles along with government approved websites were used. All the papers and the journal articles were extracted using electronic and digital means. Electronic search was done using databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, JSTOR, Wiley Online Library and many other international tourism journals. Along with this special reference was given to the government-approved websites in order to retrieve statistical data. Further, only peer reviewed articles were refereed. Manual data such as newspaper articles and tourism magazines were used as a reference in order to broaden the horizon for the analysis and critic purposes.
Literature review
Over all within this literature review articles are being reviewed at different levels such as informative and descriptive introduction and abstract, appropriate research and analysis methodology, exclusivity of the topic chosen for the study along with the extent up to which the hypothesis or the rationales were met. Mihalic, Segota, Knezevic Cvelbar and Kuscer (2016) focused towards the political influence in the Bled tourism, along with the influence of the political environment and destination governance, on sustainable tourism development. Hall (2016) based their study upon ‘Academic interventions: framing social marketing's potential for successful sustainable tourism behavioural change’.
Carr, Ruhanen and Whitford (2016) included the ‘Indigenous peoples and tourism: the challenges and opportunities for sustainable tourism’. Boley, McGehee and Hammett (2017) applied the resident’s perspective within their article ‘Importance-performance analysis (IPA) of sustainable tourism initiatives: The resident perspective’. Amir, Ghapar, Jamal and Ahmad (2015) based their study as ‘Sustainable tourism development: A study on community resilience for rural tourism in Malaysia’. Therefore, as evident all the articles chosen presents a different concept and a different approach towards reaching sustainable tourism.
Examine the Abstract and Introduction
Mihalic, Segota, Knezevic Cvelbar and Kuscer (2016) based their study towards the political influences that effects the concept of sustainable tourism. They performed this through the study of exchange process between the tourists and the indigenous people. Abstract of the paper is quiet impressive as well as informative and descriptive which explains all the aspects that will be included in the paper along with the study location, models, findings and the factors that influenced the survey along with the areas where the suggested model can be applied.
Introduction of the paper is informative that criticises the non-availability of research related to the resident perspective upon sustainable tourism. Boley, McGehee, Hammett, (2017) provided the resident perspective towards the sustainable tourism and tourism management. They focused toward the importance-performance analysis (IPA) in order tto measure the resident perspective towards sustainable tourism initiatives (STIs) taken across 3 U.S counties. However, the abstract appears to be informative but does not mention the research methodology.
