Consolidated Portfolio
1. Introduction and Summary
Communication forms the basis of all relationships. Formal relationships too are heavily dependent on communication. Good communication helps in good negotiation and results in successful agreements. It is important for project managers to develop the necessary skills, soft, inter
personal, generic and people skills for conducting successful negotiations.
Project managers are not just great leaders they are also great communicators and in exercising great communication they are persuasive, assertive and demonstrate deep understanding of emotional intelligence.
The learning outcomes in this unit have been based on developing knowledge as well as skills necessary for creating relevant communication expertise in project negotiations. It aims at creating proper understating with students regarding the importance and vitality of concepts such as commercial negotiation, project procurement management and conflict resolution. Throughout the unit we have learned about terms and concepts such as commercial projects and commercial planning and their relation to negotiation theory and practice. We have learnt the complex government and non-government contractual arrangements and the various methods of project negotiation and conflict management in diverse projects of technological and asset lifecycles.
In addition, we have also learnt the theories and principles of negotiations, commercial negotiations and conflict resolution for large scale companies. All of these demonstrated to us through case studies, theory and reflective learning has enabled us to gain a comprehensive understanding and confidence in obtaining a creative flair for achieving commercial project agreements through negotiation and conflict resolution.

I was able to understand the concept of contractual arrangements and structure of building agreements through understanding the basics of negotiation demonstrated in the paper by Pena-Mora and Tamaki (2001). This paper discussed the effect of delivery systems on negotiations with relation to large-scale infrastructure projects.
In addition the Channel Tunnel case study showed how lack of collaboration and resistance to negotiation can lead to failure of resolution of disputes. We thus learned about different types of project structures and delivery systems both governmental and non-governmental. The qualitative and quantitative aspects of negotiation were also learnt through game theory and negotiation theory.
b. LO2
i. Summary
The second unit outcome helped us assess the common arguments that arise during conflicts and disputes using logic. It helped us develop skills of persuasion and relevant factors that help in influencing related parties in case of conflict and dispute.
ii. Evidence
I grasped the theory regarding this outcome through learning about the...
