Introduction
Sustainability today is gaining importance in all industries and the tourism industry is not an exception. In order to ensure that the world enjoys a better present and an even better tomorrow, sustainability has to be put at the forefront of businesses. Since procurement deals with acquiring materials for use in the industry, ensuring that procurement is made sustainable will ensure that the tourism industry effectively moves towards a sustainable future.
This report aims at studying the relationship between sustainability practices in tourism and procurement and its corresponding benefits. It will analyse what sustainable development is, its relation to tourism industry and how procurement in tourism industry can play an important role in sustainability
What is Sustainable Development?
One of the most important cornerstones of development are resources. Resources are available to us through different forms from nature. This has helped us in creating the world as we know it today. However, not all of these resources are inexhaustible. Resources like oil, petrol and coal are exhaustible and will finish one day. On the other hand, the environment we live in is fast depleting. The quality of air and water are deteriorating along with the rise of temperature each year. All of this is resulting in gradual change in climate and worsening of the biosphere as a whole. The need to take action in order to preserve nature and natural resources has given rise to the concept of sustainability.
Sustainable development refers to using resources in the present in such a manner that the resources for the future generations is not compromised in any way (Sneddon, Howarth, and Norgaard, 2006). Sustainable development as such, is not a new concept. It has been in use for hundreds of years.
