Pope Francis has called the ongoing conflict in Syria “the worst humanitarian disaster after World War II” (Gavlak, 2018, np) Recent reports note that: • According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, “since 2011, the war in Syria has claimed thousands of lives and left 11 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. More than half the country’s population has been forced to flee their homes, including 6.6 million refugees seeking safety in neighboring countries and another 6.7 million who are internally displaced inside Syria” (https://www.unrefugees.org/emergencies/syria/ August, 2020) • the conflict has been going on for many years; • according to World Vision (June 21, 2019) “healthcare centers and hospitals, schools, utilities, and water and sanitation systems are damaged or destroyed”; • in the words of the head of the U.N. Refugee Agency "we are witnessing an extended failure of political action by states to find a solution to this war… an increasing internationalization of the conflict" (with a number of countries now involved in the crisis) (Gavlak 2018, np). • The United Nations Security Council has demanded an end to “the indiscriminate use of weapons in populated areas” though thousands of civilians have died, and continue to die in the conflict (BBC, 2016, np). • Fr. Emanuel Youkhana, “archimandrite of the Assyrian Church of the East”, has called for an end to the war and for urgent international aid: “battle cannot be a path to peace" (Gavlak 2018, np) • Human rights advocates have identified the indiscriminate bombing of civilians as the major cause of the crisis in Afrin, after it was invaded in 2018 (Gavlak 2018, np) • The BBC has reported that by 2016 almost five million people had to leave Syria because of the conflict, mostly women and children – “one of the largest refugee exoduses in recent history” (BBC 2016, np) The recommended readings on LEO will provide important information on the common good and human dignity; for more information on the crisis in Syria, see: 1. “About the Crisis in Syria”, United Nations Refugee Agency https://www.unrefugees.org/emergencies/syria/ (accessed August 2020) 2. “Syrian refugee crisis: Facts, FAQs, and how to help” (World Vision Staff, June 21, 2019) at https://www.worldvision.org/refugees-news-stories/syrian-refugee-crisisfacts 3. An ongoing military conflict in Syria between the government of Syria and many opposition groups which started on the 15th of March 2011, is known as the Syrian civil war. “U.N. officials, church leaders decry escalating situation in Syria” (Dale Gavlak, February 13, 2018).This has become a political dispute between competing religious sects, impacting the entire country and heavily affected by foreign interventions. The civil war has had a disastrous effect both local and the global level, and has influenced every aspect of life, economy, business and trade. The war has killed thousands, ripped the country apart and has set back the standard of living by decades.
The Syrian war has affected the other Middle East countries like Iran, Afghanistan, Palestine, Yemen, Jordan and turkey.  The number of displaced migrants in the Middle East has increase immensely in the past years, from about 5 million to about 23 million. The consequence of this armed conflict is that millions of them have lost their lives and many have lost their homes and their places of birth. The displacement has happened mainly because of the conflict and for the economic opportunities “Syrian Civil War Fast Facts” (August 27, 2013).
When we look at the effect of war on people's life and mankind, it turns out that at least 70% of refugee families is living in overcrowded and decaying rooms, with no privacy, electricity or running water. Millions of people have been deprived of civil infrastructure and services without any means of supporting their family. The historic landmarks, tourist spots the busy marketplaces that used to be a source of livelihood for the locals have been reduced to rubble. “Syrian refugee crisis: Facts, FAQs, and how to help” (World Vision Staff, June 21, 2019).
The most significant impact has been on the mental health of the civilian population. Women and children are worst affected, along with other vulnerable groups, the elderly and the people with disabilities. The crisis has robbed their childhood and has influenced their physical and mental health and career prospects. Many children in refugees work to support their families, often for little pay under difficult or deteriorating conditions. The war has destroyed the future generations and has reversed decades of progress in education. (Syrian refugee crisis: Facts, FAQs, and how to help, World Vision). People who are vulnerable to poverty, children and women who are the vulnerable to injustice should be given the opportunity to live a life equal to their dignity without any barriers to their freedom. Every person should have ample access to the goods and services of society in order to lead satisfying lives fully and easily. As we work together to strengthen people's health in our society and the world, the common good is accomplished.
