Criminalizing the mentally ill
Mental illness in relation to crime has been a point of debate for a long time. This relation com
es from the fact that the most common plea criminals make to have their sentences reduced is mental illness. The viability of such claims is often determined by the criminals medical records and consequently, the convicted is sent to the prison, regardless of whether he is determined to be mentally ill or not. The sentence served by the convict is the only thing that changes due to such claims, however, it does more damage than visible to the remaining mentally ill population of the country. The general belief that arises from such claims is that those who are mentally ill are criminals and what they need is not treatment but imprisonment.
