All employees must have knowledge about cultural awareness. They must be sensible and have an empathetic attitude that enables them to work with colleagues belonging to different cultural groups. They must treat everyone with respect and dignity from diverse cultural and social groups consisting of Aboriginal people.
Outlining my cultural and social perspect
ives and biases
Each of the individuals is part of the social group and in each group there exist different principles, beliefs, and understanding about a problem. Furthermore, each of the groups has some practices that are unique to them. According to the social and cultural perspective language, culture, beliefs and thoughts are significant in a particular community or a social group. These elements are known to create diversity. Hence, cultural awareness and knowledge about the existing diversity is vital. I am aware of the cultures and prefer to live in a diverse setting.
It is the choice of an individual to decide in which societal settings they will get involved and exclude the settings that they never want to be involved with. My cultural perspective always recognizes the diversity of the world. Furthermore, I have been taught about respecting all cultures and relate with other people well. Still, it is not free from biases as in recent times I have developed a feeling that my culture is best and it is better for all cultures. Hence, even though I respect cultural diversity, I disregard cultures that do not share same beliefs as mine (Nida-Rümelin, 2017).
Social biases are either positive or negative. Whenever I see someone from the Aboriginal group then at first glance I tend to think that their appearance is quite weird than the people from my culture. I have a bias to the Aboriginal people’s culture as it promotes endless freedom for them, and it is applicable for both females and males both. I think that this cultural group is getting special treatment at present. For example, in Australia, special programs are designed for them for helping to overcome their disadvantages like Aboriginal Medical Services and Aboriginal Legal Services. It provides free of cost legal and medical services so I think they are quite privileged despite being one of the most neglected cultural groups.
Another major reason for being biased toward the Aboriginal group is that I am a member of a certain social group. Therefore, I am only exposed to my group and so I have a limited idea about another cultural group. However, for enhancing social awareness I plan to conduct research work so that I develop understanding about their culture to some extent (Billon, 2017). Sometimes the above-mentioned biases push me to think that I might be racist but cultural bias is one of the major elements of human belief. It is the bias that creates a barrier in the personal lives and workplaces. However, I believe that bias will fade out eventually as I plan to interact with people from different cultures. Presently, I try to respect everyone and view every culture as equal though it is different.
My limitations in terms of social awareness
Social awareness is the ability to understand and respond to situations in the best possible manner. It indicates how a person reacts to social situations. Similarly, it is also the ability for responding effectively.
Following are some of the limitations that I have identified concerning social awareness:
· Communication barriers: I always feel comfortable with the people from my culture and never try to understand what Aboriginal people want to say as their English is quite difficult to understand. Hence, my social awareness remains completely limited as I miss some prime information because of a lack of communication.
· Personal insecurities: I have some personal...
