    Case study 1 – David
David is an 18-year-old who has previously been a person using your service. He has come into the agency today in what appears to be a very depressed state. Gentle questioning confirms that David feels totally lacking in any motivation, has not been able to get out of bed and has “dragged” himself there that morning knowing he needs help. Further questioning reveals that “David” has injected speed a couple of days earlier. This is something that he has not done for some time and it is now causing him to feel guilty and remorseful. He also reveals that these incidences of self-harming behaviour have increased in frequency recently.
From previous interactions with this young person, you are aware that he has recently arrived in Queensland from interstate and has experienced considerable disruption to his friendship and social networks through constant moving from one location to the next, including living in a succession of youth refuges. He is currently staying in temporary accommodation at local backpackers. The uncertainty this is causing him through changes in residence is exacerbated by underlying issues of childhood sexual abuse and a history of family conflict.
1a.    What are your duty of care obligations towards David in this scenario?
As support worker, I have legal obligation to act in best interest of David by providing best services the organisation has to offer. Moreover, as support worker not being judgemental and ask David well-being ‘Why he feels depressed’ and offer him other services from external organisations.
Ask David what his interests are. Whether like he would like get involvement community activities or groups and as well as assisting David finding a permanent accommodation for him to stay.
1b.    Name 2 Legislative requirements that will guide you in your role as a housing support worker?
Housing Act 2003 sets out the obligations for people that receive housing assistance and it applies the National Regulatory System for Community Housing to community housing providers that operate in Queensland and Housing Regulation 2015 is the supporting legislation for the Housing Act 2003 (Department of Housing and Public Works, 2020)
The Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 outlines the rights and responsibilities of tenants, property managers/agents, property owners/landlords and caravan park managers involved in residential renting in Queensland. It sets out what the parties to a tenancy agreement can and cannot do, how to address issues that may arise during a tenancy and explains what measures can be taken if one of the parties to a tenancy breaches the provisions of the law...
