1. Thesis Statement
Liberty in America came with a setback of slavery as nineteenth century and witnessed the major compromises to prohibit the slavery in the country. Slavery in America was legally practiced throughout 17th and 18th century. In the mid of 19th century, with the expansion to the West World, various movements were organized to abolish slavery, which ultimately led to the civil war.
2. Outcomes of the Movements to Abolish Slavery
    There were many movements, which had contributed in abolishing slavery in America. Some were unsuccessful; nevertheless, some other movements marked the history and they had put noteworthy impacts on America in abolishment of slavery. Two outcomes each of some of these famous movements are as follows:
3/5ths Compromise
    The three-fifth compromise was suggested by Wilson and Roger Sherman. They were both delegates for the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It was the compromise among the framers of the constitution. According to this compromise, all slaves of States are counted as three-fifth of the White population of that State when conducting census of their population. This also results in apportionment of taxes on land values. This has provided advantage to the slave-owning states. The taxes were started to be levied on the actual value of land instead of population resulting in depreciation of the value of land to get relief from taxes (Nofi, 2017).
Missouri Compromise of 1820
    Missouri compromise was an attempt to preserve the balance of power between Congress of Slave States and Free State. According to this compromise, Missouri was considered as Slave State, whereas Maine as a Free State. There was rise in the tensions between Pro-Slavery and Anti-Slavery Factions within the congress of America. Other than this, it also prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory, north at the latitude line of the 36° 30´ (Hartman, 1997). This compromise was welcomed and balance was maintained.
