You will be expected to locate a recent Canadian news item (the past 12 months) from a newspaper, website, newscast, or another source of mainstream news reporting. This news item must be related to one of the topics addressed in the Griffiths’ text. You must supplement your assessment with at least three (3) scholarly (peer-reviewed) journal articles. You will be expected to include the news article and O’Regan & Reid text in your list of references. \ This term paper must be five (5) typed pages long (excluding the Title page and your Reference page). Double-spaced, 12-point font, and one-inch margins all around. Other style and referencing requirements must adhere to the UFV ASC APA Citation Style Guide, 7th Ed. If you are unfamiliar with this style of referencing and you require assistance in completing your term paper, I strongly encourage you to seek out early help from the UFV Academic Success Centre. The term paper must be uploaded into Blackboard before Friday, December 8, 2023, at 10:00 am. Your term paper will be graded in the following manner: Introduction – 10% You will be expected to introduce the issue from your news item and then explain the steps you will follow in your paper. It should explain to me how you will meet the assignment ***WHAT THIS MEANS*** In order to have a chance for a decent mark, you will need to properly cite the news item, the Griffiths’ text, and a minimum of three (3) scholarly (peer-reviewed) journal articles in your references at the end of your paper. You will need to follow the UFV ASC APA Citation Style Guide, 7th Ed. CRIM 251 ON1 (Fall 2023) Page 5 expectations. You are essentially getting my attention and then explaining the learning roadmap you intend to show me. Research – 40% This will require you to take relevant information from your sources, including the scholarly (peer-reviewed) journal articles and the O’Regan and Reid text, and show me what you have learned. I will be looking for your ability to assimilate the information from the research you have done and convey it to me in your own words. Quotes should be rarely used! (The University of Toronto Writing Advice - Using Quotations is a very useful resource in explaining the criteria for the use of quotes.) If you feel a quote is essential for your paper, you must have an in-text citation with the page immediately after the quote. If your source document has no page numbers, say a website, you must count the paragraphs and note that in your in-text citation. The UFV ASC APA Citation Style Guide, 7th Ed is essential reading to get this correct. Discussion – 30% In this section, I will be assessing your analytical and thinking skills. You will need to debate the merits and implications of what you have learned from your work in the research. You should not need extensive references at this point, as you will draw on the findings from the research you conducted in the previous section. Conclusion – 10% This is where you pull together the key points from your research and discussion. You should highlight the important takeaways from what you have learned. Style – 10% If you are not following the UFV ASC APA Citation Style Guide, 7th Ed, you will have little success here. I will also expect you to use the spelling and grammar function of Microsoft Word before you submit it to me. Proofreading is also strongly recommended. Do not use the first-person pronoun “I” in your paper. You should be consistently writing in the third person. I need to assess your university-level writing and comprehension skills, not your ability to cut and paste the work of other authors. CRIM 251 ON1 (Fall 2023) Page 6 If your paper is submitted after the deadline, you will lose 10% of your available marks for every day you are late. So, if you are late by five days, you will lose 50% of your possible marks for the assignment. The penalty will be applied after a mark has been assigned to your submission. If you are jammed up, and life happens, be sure to contact me immediately and see what other alternate arrangements we can make. Communication is always key to getting these issues resolved. Exams The exams will be multiple choice. The midterm will be administered during the semester through Blackboard. You will have several days to access the exam. The final exam will be scheduled by UFV, and you will be required to complete it in Blackboard on the designated date and time. Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI): The instructor must authorize the use of AI tools to complete any assignment beforehand. Students who want to use AI tools must send an email to their instructor specifying the assignment they want to use them on, identify the tool they want to use, and explain how they will use the tool. The use of AI technology is prohibited in completing quizzes and exams. The unauthorized use of AI technology will ***WHAT THIS MEANS*** Your paper must have the following headings: Introduction, Research, Discussion, Conclusion, and References.
