CCS101 Communicating for cultural safety – Assessment 3 Digital presentation CCS101_Assessment_3_Module_6.1 Introduction Nurses are required to effectively communicate and work respectively with people from diverse social and cultural groups, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Health professionals must be able to identify issues of diversity, and ensure human rights are maintained at all times in their practise. This assessment provides an opportunity for you to communicate your understanding of cultural diversity in Australia and to develop a cultural safety strategy. Summary This assessment requires you to create a digital presentation (using software like PowerPoint or Prezi) about diversity in Australia, which includes development of a cultural safety strategy. Task Instructions To complete this assessment, you must create a digital presentation. Your presentation should be completed using PowerPoint, Prezi or other similar program. Presentation Sections Your presentation must include the three (3) sections listed below. Each of those sections should form a different focus for the presentation, and have its own title. Within each section, there are a number of points that you must address, as detailed below. Section 1: Clarifying cultural competence and diversity In this section you must address the following concepts: 1. Culture: Provide a 20-30-word definition of culture 2. Cultural awareness: Describe your own cultural identity, by providing: o A 20-word summary of your culture o Two (2) beliefs/belief systems you have o Two (2) personal values and attitudes you hold o Two (2) examples of how the community attitudes, language, policies and structures of your culture impact on how you view different people and groups. 3. Diversity: Provide a 20-30-word definition of diversity 4. Diversity: Describe the characteristics of each aspect of diversity listed below (10 words each) o Culture, race, ethnicity o Disability o Religious or spiritual beliefs o Gender o Generational o Sexual orientation/sexual identity – Heterosexual, (LGBTQIA) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual or allied. Section 2: Concepts and considerations for diversity in Australia In this section you must address the following points: 1. Provide a summary of how the diversity of Australia’s population impacts the different areas of work and life listed below (50 words for each). o Political policy o Social interactions o Economic policy and support o Cultural awareness and acceptance 2. Describe in 50 words: o The responsibility employers have to ensure a discrimination-free environment o The rights that workers and clients have with regards to discrimination o What people can do if they feel they are being discriminated against. 3. Explain in 20 words, one (1) way in which Australia’s diverse population has influenced and changed practices in Australia 4. For each of the following areas, specify one (1) law (national, state or international) that protects workers from discrimination in the workplace and one (1) implication for people who breach that law: a. Identify two (2) policies/frameworks/tools/codes that are used in the workplace to ensure that human rights are maintained and respected. 6. Provide a 15-word answer to each of the following: e. What are human rights? f. What is the ‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ g. What is the relationship between human needs and human rights? Section 3: Respecting and understanding Indigenous cultures In this section you must address the following: 1. Summarise in 100 words, the different cultures that exist within Australia’s Indigenous population, and the importance they place on law and kinship 2. In 20 words for each, explain how these issues can affect Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people: o Social expectations o Politics o Economics 3. Reflect on the impact of your own culture, and the systems and structures of the western healthcare system and state in 100 words, how these impact on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their engagement with health services.
