Introduction
The book I have chosen to review is ‘Monster: The autobiography of an LA gang member’ by Sanyika Shakur. The book is an autobiography of a black person Kody Scott who was involved in antisocial activities since twelve years of age in a gang. Through his brutality and violence, he got into the LA gang-the Crips.
Overview of the Book
The autobiography tells us how Kody Scott transformed to Shakur (2004) after his imprisonment. He became a black nationalist and kept his viewpoint on racism in America. He robbed an African-American person in the streets of America until he was disfigured. Kody was imprisoned for this, which transformed him when he joined the Republic of New Afrika movement as a Black Nationalist.
Kody was raised by her mother alone due to the ill treatment of his father. The story narrates how Kody joined a gang life being raised up in a gang culture and misery and how he again transformed being a clean person in the society by leaving the thug life he chose for himself. Therefore, from Kody Scott to ‘Monster Kody’ and then Sanyika Shakura, the story is a complete depiction of the youth stability and acceptance by the society, which drives a person’s mental health in life.
Summary
The book begins with the story about childhood of the author, which was not very pleasant. Kody’s father used to ill-treat him being the son of a black woman and dealt with his other children very lovingly. This created a violence attitude of Kody as he lacked love from both his mother and father. Kody always saw how his father misbehaved with his mother but could not do anything being a 13-year-old kid.
