Competence, technical skills, integrity and determination are traits most people would agree are important for leadership. But what about self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills? Daniel Goleman, author of numerous books and articles on emotional intelligence, including his seminal work
Emotional Intelligence
(1995), believes these “softer skill” traits, which are associated with emotional intelligence (EI), are equally important for leaders. In fact, some would argue that emotional intelligence, as opposed to cognitive ability, is the key to successful leadership performance.

Analyze the use of assessments of emotional intelligence in evaluating the potential of individuals for senior leadership positions. Then, select three specific assessments of emotional intelligence (do not select the EISA). Review and evaluate each assessment instrument. In a paper of at least 1750 – 2100 words (or 5 -7 pages) in length (excluding title, abstract, and reference pages), address the following:



  1. Discuss the concept of EI and its evolution as a factor associated with leadership performance. How do researchers classify EI—as a distinct component of intelligence or as a set of personality or behavioral characteristics? Why is this classification important when considering the use of assessments of EI for senior leadership?

  2. Debate the idea that EI is as critical, or perhaps more critical, than cognitive ability in determining leadership success. Compare and contrast views of researchers on this issue.

  3. For each of the three different assessments of emotional intelligence you have selected, describe the theoretical framework upon which each assessment is based, the typical uses for each assessment, and the target population(s) for each assessment.

  4. Discuss each instrument's reliability and validity, as well as administration considerations and costs to either the user or to the organization administering the assessment.

  5. Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using each assessment for its intended purpose. Under what circumstances would you recommend its use? When would you NOT recommend its use and why?

Concept of EI
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is offering the ability to a person for understanding the emotional aspects of others. Therefore, EI offers opportunity in front of individuals to manage their emotions in the positive perspectives and manage different operations in the organization. It helps managers or leaders to make effective communication with employees as well as associated people of the company with the fluent manner (Potter et al., 2018). Self-awareness, self-regulation, internal motivation, empathy and social skills are the five main components of emotional intelligence. It shows that EI helps a person to manage all those components in case of performing different operations.
EI as an Evolved Factor Associated with Leadership Performance
EI serves its contributions in the leadership operation of the leaders with the developed contexts. Within this context, it can be noted that leaders of the organization can manage the emotions of their employees with the application of EI in their leadership activities. This helps leaders to adopt the best workforces from their employees. Therefore, EI help leaders to serve empathy to the employees of the company (Yildizbas, 2017).
This process helps employees to take motivation from the leader to achieve the destined goals of the company based on their developed ornaments. On the other hand, EI allows leaders to make their self-awareness involve developed leadership strategies in their performances. On the other hand, EI offers the ability for individuals to be flexible to the time of making changes in different activities. It helps in the development of conflict management activities. Importance of Classification of EI for Senior Leadership
Classification of EI is the most important aspect for the performances of leadership activities with success. In that case, it can be mentioned that the requirements of the leadership activities are not the same every time (Nabih et al., 2016). On this note, the classification of EI is required as it helps in the implementation of the specific characters of EI in its required places. Thus, the classification of EI helps to meet the emotional needs of individuals. It also helps to develop the resilience capacity within a person at the time of performing multiple activities.
