Reflective Report on Communication
Introduction
Culture is the way of life in which people remain connected by several means. In fact, societies are the places where cultures of people develop. In the process of exchanging ideas with each other, culture is the first concept that helps in developing effective communication norms between people. It is also seen that people have diversified skills and potential, when it comes to the ground of framing exact messages either they are written or verbal. Especially in the context of verbal communication, th
e mode, content and delivery of the message altogether determine whether the communication was successful or not. “In the world, the need of communication between people from different cultures has increased greatly. Language is definitely an obstacle to intercultural communication, but the greater obstacle is how to navigate around the cultural differences. It is estimated that from two-thirds to three-fourths of our communication are nonverbal and behaviors” (Chi, 2016).
In the same context, it can be stated that modern world is defined by media; how media influences the lives of people is already known. People remain updated about the happenings around them with the help of available media sources and it makes the responsibility that media people take on them sensitive and critical. Oprah Winfrey is one of the most discussed personalities in the world of media. She is exceptionally talented woman who has worked over finding the new way of discussing ideas with people, the talk shows. She is the most renowned talk show host, a journalist as well as the social activist. The following is an analysis of the three major topics namely, intercultural communication, communication and gender as well as communication as the helping concept in resolving conflict through mediation in one of her famous talk show with Mitchell Obama, the first Lady of United States.
Intercultural Communication
At first, it is noteworthy in the context of structuring communication with others that culture plays pivotal role in it; people belonging to different cultural backgrounds have different modes and beliefs in making communication possible with others (O’Conner et al, 2014). Culture justifies how people perceive the content and subject matter of a particular topic that is taken up for communication (Sommier, 2014). For example, it might be difficult for a Hindu to talk about eating ‘beef’ in a dialogue with a person belonging to other than Hindu religion because, for him, beef eating is similar to denouncing the religious principles. Thus, the intercultural theory of communication states that people of different communities—when they communicate with each other—share the knowledge in a way that they both acquire and apply knowledge skills. it is basically a part of human nature to know as much possible about some topic that does not relate to his or her own culture. As a result of the same, human beings perceive the world as a place which is filled with immense possibilities of knowing each other and, therefore; it is more like sharing knowledge upon mutual grounds of accepting the cultural norms (O’Conner et al, 2014).
The same thought is applicable in the business communication norms of today. The organizations of modern business world tend to expand their businesses overseas which automatically bring in the possibility of creating diverse cultural organizational premises where professionals are placed to work (O’Conner et al, 2014). Companies these days emphasize the need of having cultural intelligence as the inherent trait of professional attitude of employees so that they can show respect to the cultures of others. Thus, being culturally sensitive is more like a personality attribute that is seen in the professional world (Sommier, 2014). Especially in the context of media persons like Oprah Winfrey, their words and expressions become subjected to be criticized or admired by a large audience. Therefore; intercultural communication that such people make becomes more critical and more sensitive than others in this respect.
In the selected interview of Mitchell Obama, Winfrey opens up the discussion by ‘connecting her past life to the present. There is a kind of cultural sensitivity which shows that in spite of holding a powerful position now, Mrs. Obama is quite humble in discussing about her past life like how it was and how she and Winfrey both belong to same category of struggling people who worked hard to make changes in their lives. It is more like ‘anticipation’, a part of intercultural communication strategy that Winfrey takes up in the very start of the communication (O’Conner et al, 2014). She expects that the answers given by Mitchell over her life will be helpful in exploring more about her past life. Later in the same interview, they both discuss freely about how the issue of public health and wellbeing can be achieved by showing concerns to the cultures of various communities living in United States. The two get quite engaged in the cultural discussion which builds up strong and positive environment for the open talk show.
Secondly, Oprah does not fail to mention about her own past life like how her life was full of hardships initially and how she could innovate that not always, it is necessary to go with the flow. She hints at marginalized communities suffering from racial segregation on cultural grounds. However, as their spokesperson, she manages building positivity and assurance that by making attempts rigorously like she did, anyone can become successful in...
