Assessment Task 3 - Week 5 (30%- 30 marks) Annotated Bibliography

Annotated bibliography:This assessment requires you to develop a critical assessment of the relevant literature surrounding the topic under discussion and demonstrate academic skills in researching evidence based best practice. This assessment also reflects your engagement with course material.

As a Registered Nurse, your clinical knowledge and best practice develops from the evidence found in researching the literature (journals). Nurses have an obligation in remaining current in their practice which means you have a commitment to life-long learning.

Aim of this assessment: To demonstrate that you understand how to undertake a literature search and compile a critical evaluation of the articles you have chosen

Hint:Go back and review all the information you have been provided with. Watch the videos againsmilebefore you start writing! Read this book and take note of the example in Chapter 9 provided by the Learning Skills Advisors.

Develop your Annotated Bibliography in conjunction with the Marking Guide (rubric) contained in Chapter 4 of this book.

Due:Friday 5 April 5pm

Value:30%

Word Count:300 words per annotated bibliography -900 words for entire assessment piece (+ or - 10%).In this assessment task you are asked to provide complexity rather than word count.

Your precis of each article will need to be succinct in relation to critically analysing each article you have chosen i.e. you have 300 words to discuss your article using the steps/headings shown below. Contact a learning skills advisor for assistance with your draft (if required) or submit a draft toStudiosity (see Moodle) for assistance

How to proceed:You are first asked to show that you can undertake a search of the academic literature by researching and then selecting three (3) articles of evidence based best practice on the topic of your choice i.e. subcutaneous or intramuscular injection This assessment then requires you to demonstrate your critical assessment skills (using the steps/heading below) in order to evaluate the journal articlesyou have selected.

Here is a link to evaluate the quality of the articles you find

bcutaneous injection of heparin. Journal of clinical nursing, 23(7-8), 1105-1113. https://doi.org/10.1111/jocn.12291
What is the author’s viewpoint?
In this article, after conducting the study, the author advocates the use of 15 second injection duration, with 5 seconds wait before withdrawal of needle for subcutaneous injections. According to the author, this reduces bruising. In addition, since the pain was lesser in abdomen than in thigh of patients being administered the injection; the author recommends the use the abdomen for injections than the thighs
What are the research findings of the paper you are discussing?
The research showed that there was a significant lesser amount of bruising and size of bruising when 15 second injection and 5 second wait was used. However, the study showed no difference in pain in the 15 second injections and regular injections. The study also observed that there was higher pain in thighs when compared to the abdomen without any significant difference in the size or occurrence of bruising between thigh and abdomen.
Was the paper useful or did it have limitations?
The paper was fairly useful in that it showed one method of reducing bruising due to subcutaneous injections and another method to reduce pain. The study was limited by statistical observation of data and lacked the quantitative side which would have added to the insight on patient care.
Evaluative comment
The study demonstrates that using 15 method injection duration and then a lapse of 5 seconds before withdrawing the injection reduced bruising occurrence and size in patients. In addition, it showed that pain in abdomen injections was...
