Critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills are used every day in practice by Registered Nurses. The aim of this task is for you to apply the clinical reasoning cycle (Levett-Jones, 2012) to evaluate a clinical decision. Familiarisation with the clinical reasoning cycle will support you to provide safe quality care as a practicing Registered Nurse.
Task Instructions: Write a 2000 word essay that evaluates your chosen decision using all eight stages of the clinical reasoning cycle (Levett-Jones, 2012). You need to identify a different patient scenario to the one you discussed in your first essay. You only need to discuss one example of a clinical decision. The clinical decision you select can be a decision that went well or one with a negative outcome.
1) Analyse how each stage of the clinical reasoning cycle (Levett-Jones, 2012) was or was not applied. 2) Critically reflect on what you have learnt from applying the clinical reasoning model to your chosen decision and identify what you could have done differently. You may choose to draw on other models of reflection. 3) Include at least two recommendations for a course of action that could be followed or which could be used by nurses for future practice. You should link these to relevant Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) as part of your justification for these recommendations.
