For this assignment I want you to conduct a t-test in SPSS using the data I have provided (note: this is not real data). More detailed instructions follow:

I want you to imagine that the state is trying to decide what types of prisons they should build in the future. You have been asked by the WV state legislature to conduct a study comparing inmate violence between prisons with atraditional designand prisons with apodular design. With this in mind you get access to one podular prison and one traditional prison and begin collecting data. You decided that the best way to measure violence is by looking at the official records (representing incidents of violence) of 25 randomly selected inmates from each institution (in reality you would likely get more than this but this should cut back on the data entry needed). Based on a review of the literature you think that podular prisons will have lower levels of violence. The data you collected is provided below.

Here is what I want you to do:

This somewhat follows the steps in hypothesis testing:

  1. Enter your data into SPSS. (You will need to enter it in the correct format in order for your analysis to be correct).

  2. Create a null and research hypothesis for the following research question. Do podular prisons have lower levels of violence compared to traditional prisons?

  3. Pick an appropriate test statistics (this part should be easy, we already know we need to conduct a t-test). However, answer the following: should you use an independent or dependent t-test? Why?

  4. Determine if the data meets the required assumptions for the t-test you selected. Report your results. (If you do not meet the assumptions run the test anyway).

  5. Set a critical value (alpha level). Explain why you selected the alpha level you did.

  6. Run the test, and interpret the results. Also hand calculate and report the effect size.

  7. Reject or accept the null Hypothesis. Explain your answer.

  8. Finally, right a 2-3 paragraph summary of your results and conclusions as if you were presenting your study to others in a journal article.

You should type your answers to this assignment. You may cut and past graphs from the SPSS output directly into a word document. I encourage you to do this when talking about some of the assumption results.

This assignment measures the following unit outcome goals.

After this unit you will be able to:

  1. Describe theory and logic behind t-test and ANOVA. (connects to Course Outcome 1)

  2. Conduct and interpret a t-test. (connects to Course Outcome 2 and 3)

There are two groups traditional and podular. We have coded traditional as 1 and modular as 2.
Assumptio
n of independence:
We don't have access to research design but we know these sample has drawn independently.
Assumption of scale of measurement:
Our dependent variable measurements should interval or ratio. In our data this assumption has met.
Assumption of normality:
We have drawn histogram of violence and we can easily infer that our data is normally distributed. As we can see from statistics table, skewness and kurtosis value is in the range of (-1, 1). We have also ran some test to check normality of data. Both test (KS test and Shapiro wilk) indicates that our data is normally distributed | P-value > 0.05.
Assumption of homogeneity of variance:
We have conducted levene test to check this assumption. As we can see from independence t test table, p value for levene test is greater than 0.05, for homogeneous variance it should be greater than 0.05. Hence, assumption of homogeneity of variance has also met.
