Wreck of Boat LM06 on Shark Reef, in RISMIS passage
The LM06
LM06 is a class 3 boat with length 63 feet was on service since 2005, fitted with Honda 557 hp (415 kW) engine for
powering this long boat. The bottom of the boat is coated specially with copper and silver based alloy-based metal for extra protection from corrosions and impacts. Since this special coating provides weak/blind spots due to improper welding of alloy to main body.
The Incident
On 8th June at 1520 hours boat started to sink with inflow of water fill in fuel storage compartment.
RISMIS passage is one of the worst shallow regions with many reef colonies many causing potential damage to boats in the range (class 1 to 3). The copper and silver coat need to be maintained regularly for protection; it was not maintained since its inception results in erosion of bottom due to oxidative reaction of metal on contact with salty ocean water. Once the coat gets off will expose the steel part results in weak/blind spot by corrosion, as boat passes through shallow reef an impact by medium strength reef results in crack of steel paving the passage for water seepage.
The pressure of water made seepage to a hole enough in size for water to sink boat, LM06 impact results in water flow directly into fuel storage region resulted in emulsion (o/w) phase. Hence all the components based on fuel are broke due to o/w, crew spotted the o/w phase while pump generator stopped to start. As there is no chance to escape since o/w phase broke all components and no life boat available, hence crew raised distress call to nearby ASR at 15:35 hours for rescue giving location of boat.
Locating the shipwreck
Air Sea Rescue (ASR) received distress call from LM06 at 15:35 hours for immediate help for saving...
