Numerous people depend on pacemakers to help them function on a daily basis. According to the American Heart Association, 3 million indivi
duals worldwide are pacemaker users, and around 6 lakh pacemakers are placed each year. The sinoatrial node (SA node), the heart's natural pacemaker that aids in a regular rhythm, should not be mistaken for a pacemaker (Abdur Rehman et al,2019). The artificial pacemaker, sometimes referred to as a cardiac pacing device, controls the heartbeat using electrical impulses provided by electrodes contracting heart muscles. Its primary function is to track the heartbeat of the cardiac patient and provide electrical energy to pace the heart if it beats too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly.
Overview
The four-chambered heart's muscle anatomy and electrical stimulation process enable it to beat 72 to 100 times each minute. According to the Cleveland Clinic's information on pacemakers, the sinoatrial node, the heart's "natural" pacemaker, produces electrical impulses. The right and left atria, or the heart's upper chambers, are stimulated to contract by the SA node, a group of nerve cells buried in the right atrium (Park et al,2018). This forces blood into both ventricles or the heart's bottom chambers. The atrioventricular node, known as the AV node, which is situated between the atria and ventricles, receives the wave of neuronal excitement produced by the SA node. When the AV node is triggered, it releases an electrical impulse via the His-Purkinje network, a network of specialised fibres for transporting electricity into the ventricle's muscular walls.
The ventricles then contract to pump blood out from the heart, with blood leaving either by the aorta, which extends from the left ventricle as well as connects to arteries travelling to various regions of the body, or the pulmonary artery, which travels from the right ventricle to the lungs. The complicated and profound relationship between electrical timing and muscle contraction is real. Arrhythmias result in the heart beating too quickly, too slowly, or irregularly and when the electrochemical reactions that regulate the heartbeat are damaged.
