Importance of communication

Communication is a way we transfer information and meaning. Communication plays an important part in our lives from the moment we learn how to speak. Communication has an impact on the way we communicate with our family, co-workers, and any other human being. Learning how to communicate with others can have great advantages in order to be successful in our personal lives and careers. “Communication may be defined as transmitting, receiving, and processing information.” (Baack, 2012, Chapter 1.1, para.13).

We learned that communication can be transmitted in different forms. They can be transmitted with terms or words. There are also ways of communication that we utilize such as symbols, figures, numbers, and graphs (Baack, 2012). It is important for most recruiters to have candidates that demonstrate great communications skills. Communication skills are important in order to follow directions, perform tasks and communicate in many areas of the job. In today’s society and workforce, it is required that candidates in a job meet certain communication skills. A candidate needs to have a strong vocabulary in order to communicate clearly and also to be able to understand the employer’s expectations and responsibilities. Body language in a form of communication that plays an important role, when a recruiter is looking for a candidate. Strong candidates have confidence, appropriate attire, and body language. Recruiters also look for strong and informational answers, audience assessment, excellent presentation skills, clear communication through writing and technology (Montoya, 2016).

In the workforce, communication is essential because lacking communication can lead to many problems relating to stress in the workforce, unmet expectations, relational breakdown, low morale, dissatisfied clients, product delays, and many other problems. High levels of stress in the workforce are due to lack of communication. Lack of communication can create stress that creates a sense of fear and tension among employees. Lack of communication in the workforce can lead to unmet expectations. Teams can have problems meeting their deadlines, clients can miss appointments, and teams can be confused about their job obligations and requirements. Lack of communication can cause relational breakdown among colleagues, employees, or bosses. They can feel frustration, anger, hurt, fear, and helplessness. Low morale can be another factor related to low morale. Low morale can affect productivity, motivation, and vision. Finally, the last problem that can be created by communication would be dissatisfied clients. “Communication is a fact of life, especially in the workplace, where teamwork, technology, and remote work are increasingly common” (Kinsey, 2018, para. 1).

The success of a team can be influenced by any number of factors. Small internal and external influences have the power to make or break companies, teams, and partnerships. Communication though is found to be the single most important aspect of any relationship. Without good communication skills, good ideas go to die, discord abounds. Mission, vision, and direct objectives must be clearly communicated from the top down, and back up, or alignment cannot take place.

Without proper communication, subordinates find it hard to have a clear direction and feel undervalued. When looking for new team members, in particular leaders, it is crucial that the leader possess good communication skills. Studies have shown that the way in which a boss communicates with his workers is closely related to the teams' morale. Baird and Diebolt (1976) found the satisfaction of workers to be directly correlated to the frequency, and quality of communication with a supervisor.

When choosing leadership, the ability to effectively communicate becomes even more vital. In a recent survey, “recently promoted partners [were asked] about the skills they found most important in progressing from staff to senior, senior to manager, and manager to partner. Communication skills were rated as either most important or second most important…” (Ameen, Bruns, & Jackson 1010, p. 63)
