Identifying the Problem
The problem of police brutality has been a factor for concern for the number of years in history. Ever since the formation of the police force, certain examples of police brutality have been experienced in due course of time. However, in the given scenario, examples of police brutality have increased manifold and a number of criminal charges have been found against Police officers. As opined by Myers (2017), cases of drug abuse, extortion, blackmail and sexual assault has been filed against police officers and therefore there arises and immediately need to look into the matter and find out the agencies or authorities to blame. The solution to this problem, as far as I can assess, can only be found if all the data and factors are analyzed carefully and the reason behind this unexpected happening is reached. The criminal charges that have been found against the police officers calls for immediate action from the entire police force and Attorney General it is important to understand why such activities have taken place in the locality.
Factors affecting Police misconduct
Faulty Hiring
Hiring process of police officials is often the main reason for the misconduct that is carried out by the officials in the end. During hiring, the background of the prospective police officials and not taken into consideration in detail. This might be a very effective factor in proving that the hiring process is at fault for many such events. Along with the background, a psychological test of all the police officials is necessary in order to maintain proper sanity and decency within the force. The various evaluating criteria that are taken into consideration during hiring of police officials mainly consist of academic, intelligence and strength. In this way, the character building criteria are often overlooked and the violence in the nature of the upcoming Police officers is not taking into consideration. It is my belief that this might give rise to a number of issues, which might result in police brutality in the end. The conduct of the police officials must be recorded and the background must be checked in order to find traces of drug abuse or criminal background before the process of hiring (Corey & Zelig, 2020). As far as I am concerned, police brutality can be avoided but the current scenario is otherwise. Therefore, the first and foremost reason for police brutality is the faulty hiring of police officials and the faults in the process.
Unchecked power
The powers that are exercised by the police authorities are of an unchecked and that is another reason for police brutality that is taking place. The police are considered the ultimate authority that people look forward to in case of any assault on the common people. Therefore, when there is utility in terms of police people generally do not find any authority to look forward. This is one of the main reasons the authority of the police has well limited boundaries and this leads to tyranny of the police force in some cases.
