Executive Summary
In this report, the author has presented a detailed analysis of the topic ‘Information Technology and its role in Operation Management. The ITOM is one of the most important topics in Operation Management today and the same is looked at from the past research and the development which has been done in operation management over the last 2 decades. The author has presented a detailed literature review of all the research conducted to break down the development in the operation management industry.
1. Introduction
Information Technology means what are the technologies a firm/individual is using to perform operations. Operation Management on the other hand is the way the business practices create the highest level of efficiency.
In the recent years, the growth in Information technologies has been so fast that it is inevitable to be not used in any kind of operations, and operation management being one of the core elements of any organization which strives for efficiency is at the forefront to use and upgrade to new technology to become more and more efficient and effective.
The word which is used for Information Technology in Operation Management is ‘ITOM’, which stands for Information Technology Operation Management. Information Technology Operation Management (ITOM) refers to the management of the technology infrastructure at a company level as well as the individual applications, tasks, etc.
Information Technology Operation Management started in the last century by companies to become more and more efficient and since then the technology has been a part of various industries to bring the highest level of efficiency to the industry. Information Technology is so important in operation management because managing operations of firms which are so developed and diversified and have hundreds and thousands of employees is not an easy task therefore information technology integrates all the tasks and gives the management and other personnel the information which is required to make an informed decision related to any activity effectively and efficiently. The other major role that Information Technology plays in operation management is that the organisations with the help of information technology (IT) are:
· Reduction in the cost of operations and other inputs
· Improvement in the delivery process
· Improvement in the quality with decreasing level of defects
· Customized service to customers
Technology is important in every aspect of our life and operation management being one branch which takes care of all the operations is highly dependent on technology because of the benefits the technology provides to the operations management by improvement in the process and bringing more efficiency to the already existing processes by improving them or recommending a change in the processes.
This report talks about various aspects of operation management from an information technology point of view including the importance of technology in operation management, past studies conducted in the same, and the current and future challenges which operation management will face because of the inclusion of technology, the current and future status of the same in Australia. Lastly, the report gives us a summary of the past research to see how information technology became an integral part of operations management. The report will end with a conclusion, and references to the journals, articles or any other source which has been used.
2. Literature Review
Operation Management has evolved a lot in the past years, and it is expected this will keep evolving as we keep finding new ways to optimise the industries. Also, the past research has always been effective to study the impact of various changes to operation management, and therefore here we are analysing the past research on various industries relating to operation management and information technology to see what changes have occurred and what recommendations have been provided by the authors for upcoming new changes.
1. The future of Operations Management: An Outlook and analysis (Gunasekaran and Ngai 2012)
Managing operations at all levels in various industries have been evolving over the years and it has evolved the most after the introduction of technology in each of these industries (i.e., manufacturing and service organisation). Globalisation across the world has made the market more competitive and therefore compelling the organization to introduce new and efficient enterprise operating systems to be competitive with other players in the industry both in the country and on a global level. Manufacturing industries have become service oriented because of the increase in service related activities in manufacturing. Profile of most of the service industries companies has also changed with the introduction of new technologies, globalization and outsourcing. Outsourcing has played a major role in the operation management of any industry because most of the companies in the developed nations have outsourced the complex works to the developing nations to both save costs and time, and new investment which would be required otherwise to complete the work in hand.
2. Using Information Technology to leverage transport and logistics service operations in the supply chain (Hoek 2002)
With the studies in the 20th century, it is made clear that technology and operation management has a lot of synergies between them, therefore with the focus on the supply chain which is more focused on operation management the role of technology needed to be studied, and therefore in this paper, Hoek tried to find the relationship between information technology and operation management in the supply chain industry. The author further explains that in the field of third-party logistics operations in the supply chain, technology is one of the most critical factors which has given the industry a rise. This rise is part of the industry because of a more targeted service offering to the consumers. The finding from the paper shows that the existing operation management in the transport and logistics services are mostly on the lines of traditional transport where the warehouse services are provided, but with the inclusion of technology the expansion happened in the industry and now...
