Problem Set #1
A researcher is interested in students in fifth grade versus eighth grade differences in ability to recall and forget words (word type). The researcher presented 24-word pairs to the participants (n= 15) for them to learn, 12 recall and 12 forget word pairs asking them to study those pairs. They were tested on what they remembered (presented with one word and had to recall the other). They were given feedback if they remembered correctly or not.
The same word pairs were presented but only one word in the pair was presented to participants with half being in green font (recall word pairs) and half being in red font (forget word pairs). Participants were instructed if they saw a green word to say aloud the other word in the pair. If they saw a red word participants were instructed to forget that pair and not say it aloud. If they accidently said the word pair they were given feedback that they should be forgetting those word pairs.
Last the participants were shown one word from all 24 words pairs in black font and asked to recall the other word in the pair. The researcher recorded how many of the recall words they remembered and how many of the forget words they remembered. Do older grade levels do better at learning to learn and learning to forget (word type) than younger grade levels?
