You will answer the following question through completing tutorial tasks in weeks two-four: QUESTION: 1. Select one image (from newspapers, magazines, advertising billboards, advertising on your facebook feed etc) that circulates in YOUR everyday life from THIS YEAR to analyse how representations of femininity and/or masculinity reinforce or challenge common sense assumptions about gendered identities. Make sure you use Barthes' terminology you learned in classes to illustrate your answer. NB: very detailed instructions for competing assignment are given in lectures and tutorials in the first four weeks. Make sure you attend.  HOW TO APPROACH ASSIGNMENT The question is designed to give you practice in identifying a PRIMARY SOURCE (original source of information created under time of study: In this assignment, it will be an IMAGE taken from your own dealings with cultural representations) to which you can apply a KEY CONCEPT that will help you ANALYSE how sex/gender relations are represented. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CONDUCT RESEARCH FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. The goal of this assignment is to help you move from a familiar world, where many opinions and images are circulated about gender relations, to an academic environment where you will learn to analyse and present an explanation for why some opinions and images seem to be more popular and ‘natural’ than others.   You will learn to question opinion and what appears as ‘natural’; you will begin to look at images in a way that contextualises their relations to gendered and sexualised roles (girlfriend, boyfriend, mother, father, partner, lover, etc), where such roles are tied to classificatory procedures and institutional arrangements that position all of us in terms of power and (in)equality. You will learn to analyse your image using the terminology of textual analysis that moves from a denotative meaning (literal meaning), to a connotative meaning (what is associated with the literal level). Finally, you will reflect upon how that image reproduces or challenges (or perhaps both reproduces AND challenges) a dominant ideological level of meaning (ie, something that has become naturalised) regarding femininity or masculinity. GSD1SGI: ASSIGNMENT ONE SELF-ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST. The first assignment is structured to assess your ability to apply a key concept to a set task.
