Scales of Measurement

In order to apply one’s knowledge of tests and measurements, one has to first understand the basic concepts involved in defining and summarizing the numbers. The topics of variables, measurement scales, variability, and distributions are commonly discussed in relation to defining and interpreting test scores.

Discuss the four different scales of measurement and what types of information they convey. Provide examples of what types of tests or assessments would use each scale.
Discuss what measures of central tendency and measures of variability are and their use and purpose in understanding test scores in tests and measurements. How are the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation related to the various frequency distributions (i.e., positively skewed, negatively skewed, and symmetrical/normal curve)? What does the frequency distribution of scores say about the suitability of a test?

Scale of measurement can be best explained as the process of categorizing the numbers or variables. Each measurement scale can be explained as properties that can evaluate appropriateness for the utilisation of statistical analyses. Essentially, in statistics the concept of measurement can be elaborated in terms of scales. These scales of measurement are technique to categorize variables as well as numbers. Each of these scales have certain properties that help in comprehending the validity as well as the appropriateness with respect to the statistical analysis (Frost, J., 2020).
The four scale of measurements are Ordinal, Nominal, Interval as well as Ratio
Nominal Scale is a categorical variable that is also referred as nominal variable for representing mutually exclusive numbers that have no orders or categories. It can help in representing nominal scales as natural codes that are assigned to objects as labels. Primarily, nominal representations aren’t used for measurements since its is can't be utilised for measuring quantity. Rather it measures identity and not quantitative differences and produces responses that are more quantitative. For instance, people either belong to a certain group or they don’t. These numbers are usually designed to categorize the memberships. For instance, colour of eyes like green, blue, brown etc, gender of individual either it can be female or male. Nominal scale can be applied to represent mode as well frequency distribution and chi-square. While nominal scale neither can be used to represent median and percentiles nor to add/subtract numbers (Frost, J., 2020).
Ordinal Scale is the scale that offers the ability to rank the individual attributes to the elements in the same group. However, unit of measurement isn’t...
