SPECIFIC SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES: Concurrent with, or even before you begin your school field work, you will want to have an idea of special circumstances students with special needs confront. This knowledge will help you understand how planning, instruction, assessment, and adaptations and accommodations can be used for the best interests of students. You need not have been in the classroom to complete this section of the workbook; you can complete it from your text and ancillary readings. However, as you spend time in the classroom, you will be able to augment your text learning with observations from your "real world" experience. For any five of the learning conditions or circumstances listed at the bottom of this page, write a brief discussion of the following: a) definition - how is the condition defined, including subcategories, if applicable (e.g. the levels of mental retardation--what are they, and how defined?) b) identification and assessment--note what a teacher might see that would lead her or him to ask for an evaluation, rather than how specialists assess. c) accommodations, or educational adaptations to the learning environment--list accommodations or adaptations the teacher should make. This could include changes in method of instruction, amount of time for test taking… d) any special considerations--this would include any sorts of adaptive equipment students might need, and also whether there are particular behavioral or other issues that might accompany this condition. **Important: Please use YOUR words, not the language of the textbook. This will help ensure that you understand the meaning of what you are writing. You will be asked to re-write if you use the textbook's language.** This section may be written in outline form. Specify the specific special circumstance at the top of the page, then use paragraph headings to enter information about items a, b, c, and d above. Please make a separate page for each condition/circumstance. Choose five: -children with specific learning disabilities -children with developmental disabilities -children with emotional and behavior disorders -children with communication disorders in speech and language -children with autism spectrum disorders -children who are gifted and talented -children who are deaf or hard of hearing -children with visual impairments -children with physical disabilities and other health impairments -children whose first language is not English* -children who are socially or economically disadvantaged in terms of classroom performance* *for these choices, you may need to use sources outside your text to complete discussion. You are very likely, though, to have students who experience these circumstances, and you will serve them well if you have prepared. Please insert your entries directly after this page, and include reflection about strengths and weaknesses of how the conditions you have selected are addressed in classrooms.
