Test Development Proposal: Step Two

Throughout the course, students will conduct research on instruments that are currently used to measure a particular construct, develop a new instrument to measure that construct, administer the instrument to participants, and report on data arising from those administrations. Students are free to select any construct of their interest, such as some ability, a personality construct, or any kind of attitude or belief.

Over the six-week course, students will select a construct of interest (such as depression, anxiety, job satisfaction, etc.), conduct research on other popular instruments used to measure the same or similar construct, develop a 12-15 item instrument, administer the instrument to three to five participants, discuss the methods used to administer the instrument, provide a strengths and weaknesses/limitation section regarding the development of the instrument, and discuss ways to increase the reliability and validity of the instrument.

This assignment isthe second step
toward completing your Final Test Development Proposal in Week 6. Using your construct of interest from Week 1 and building upon the instruments and information you found in Step One (Week 1),develop a seven to eight page literature review (not including the title page, abstract, and references page) on your construct of interest and the five to seven instruments used to assess it. Thus, the literature review should explain your construct of interest thoroughly, as well as provide thorough reviews of the five to seven instruments used to measure it. This is slightly different from other literature reviews, whereby the idea is to review and critique the study and findings. For this literature review you are not reviewing the study but rather are reviewing and critiquing the instrument based on what studies and other researchers have found. The idea here is to review the instrument and its usefulness in measuring your construct. Thus, what does the instrument measure, how reliable and valid is it, and what are its strengths and weaknesses? What is lacking in the instrument which paves the way for the necessity of your newly developed instrument? How are these instruments different from what you will develop?

Use five to seven scholarly resources, including mostly research studies and articles related to your construct and the instruments used to measure it.Information should be drawn from appropriate sources, such as professional journals, test publisher websites, and dissertations. Information gathered from sources must be appropriately cited, following APA guidelines.

Please be sure to include the following in your literature review:

  • A discussion of your construct of interest.

  • A thorough discussion ofeachinstrument you review for your construct, including the name of the test, what the test is used for, whether the test is appropriate for this area, what the reliability and validity of the test is, and what reviewers say about the strengths and weaknesses of it with regard to assessing this construct

  • What, in general, appears to be adequately assessed on each test with respect to the construct that you selected?

  • What does not appear to be adequately assessed?

Your literature review should justify your development of an assessment—is there a hole in what is currently being assessed that you can fill with your test? Make a case for why your proposed test would address an area that is not already well assessed.

Introduction
The predominant theme of this literature review is the depression. Depression being one of the most common mental problems at present, conducting this report will be very significant and relevant to the contemporary situation where the majority of the world population is fighting with depression, anxiety and many other mental health conditions.
Concept and Relevance of the Construct of Interest
The construct of interest that will be discussed here is depression. Depression is one of the main causes behind a pile of mental problems people are facing today throughout the world. Depression is a prevalent and chronic mental disorder that can affect people from all age groups (Fekadu, Donocik & Cleare, 2019).
Depression is very harmful for human beings; as previous studies have shown that it is the root cause for some destructive mental health problems within human beings. The problems such as anxiety, low self-esteem, thinking associated with self-harming, insomnia can originate from depression alone and that is the reason why it is very important to treat depression as soon as detected.
The depression is such a mental state that sometimes gets unsuspected but it is mentally destructive for the people who have it. Depression makes life a standstill and it reduces the growth and development of human beings as individuals. That is the reason why it is very important to detect depression as soon as possible. This written report will shed lights on the various instruments that help to assess the depression while it is present at its initial stage.
An aggregate of seven instruments will be discussed in relevance to depression in the human mental sphere. Depression is very much self-destructive and that is why; it is important to focus on the instruments very cautiously. The people fighting with depression face certain vulnerability within themselves. In order to reduce those vulnerability and insecurity it is important to assess the state where the depression is in.
Depression Assessment Instruments
Seven depression assessing instruments will be discussed within this portion. The instruments are EQ-D5, BDI, CES-D, HAM-D, MADRS, SPSI-RDM and lastly the BASC. The whole literature review will evolve around the in detail description of these instruments with its effectiveness in assessing the depression in different scenarios.
EQ-5D Instrument
EQ-5D is a very important tool that has no relation with any specific diseases in general. It just examines and analyses the overall life standards of people and checks if there are any reasons for initiating depression within the human body. It briefly evaluates and describes the mental health related quality of the associated lives. It detects the quality of life on the basis of five variables.
They are self-care, mobility, usual activities, depression or anxiety and discomfort or pain. After analyzing the life quality of the people taking up the test through this tool, the evident dimensions within them are focused upon. Then it will be easier for diagnosing the problems related to depression as a whole.
This tool works with the help of a constructive questionnaire provided to the participants in order to reflect on their quality of life. Hence, it can be said that this...
